^ Red Hot Chili Peppers should be mentioned in that. I guess not the "Seattle" sound but RHCP was up there a long long time.
RHCP was quintessential 90s alt rock but they had more of a bassy funk infusion that really differentiated them from the grungers. Plus most music snobs will tell you that they were only good in the 80s.
STP took a lot of heat in the 90's for being a copycat type band trying to capitalize on grunge. Grunge fans wouldn't accept them, Pavement didn't like them... as if you had to come out of the NW to qualify. But STP, to me, was never a grunge band, not even close. They just made a name for themselves during that era. They're a classic rock band with traditional influences and all the grunge labeling was an epic pee-pee game.
Velvet Revolver was also pretty damn dope. Scott's voice paired so well with Slash's guitar style, even though some people thought it was just an STP/G-n-R mashup. Can Chester Whinyfield stay the **** away from STP now? That should be mandatory.
good post from a friend on facebook. RIP "When I was 17, me and my friends slept on the sidewalk to get tickets to Stone Temple Pilots in Amarillo. It was a massive deal for them to play there. During the red sofa acoustic set, some redneck jerks were throwing beer bottles at Scott Weiland and he just looked at them and said, "My dick, your ass, backstage after the show." And continued playing. I'm sad he lost. Rest in peace, Scott."
Sad news. Addictions are mother****ers. For you young folks: You're only young once, so enjoy yourself, but not at the expense of your future. Carry on
LMFAO I was kidding... I have seen him perform a dozen times. I have seen STP/VR/Wildabouts.... Sober he just wanted to be left alone or talk about Notre Dame football. I feel especially bad for his two young kids.
I recall STP getting a lot of flack back in the day for being a Pearl Jam ripoff. So did some other bands. At least, that is my recollection.
It's a hidden track on the b-side compilation, Lost Dogs; written to, primarily, faux AiC front men like Scott Weiland. That song never fails to cause the hair on the back of my neck to stand; it's a gut-punch of a song.
They had a Johnny-Come-Lately whiff about them, that's for sure - especially considering earlier versions of the band did not sound anything like their eventual debut album. I was never into them, personally though I did think their sound evolved just enough for some of that early, Bush-vibe to wear off. And I really liked Velvet Revolver.
He definitely beat Alice in Chains guy... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/r80HF68KM8g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and Sublime guy... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AEYN5w4T_aM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and Blind Melon guy... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3qVPNONdF58" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> sometimes, you don't even get to do the drugs and party, your ticket gets punched from something as innocent as taking a swim... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3MMXjunSx80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Scott Weiland also apparently had relatives with cardiomyopathy. The following may sound harsh, but I don't mean it that way. It's just the way of things. You make your choices, and you shouldn't complain when the bill comes due. Mr. Weiland continued to roll the dice for a long time, and somehow managed to avoid coming up snake eyes for a very long time. One thing everybody has in common is that they're going to die eventually. BTW, the "Sour Girl" video with Buffy the Goth Vampire Slayer, and a bunch of Teletubbies is still creepy 20 years later. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YxS4lqppZ6Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I'm assuming your talking about the song Range Life by Pavement. Here are the lyrics to the last verse, and it's obvious they hated The Smashing Pumpkins, but was never sure if they trashes STP in the song:
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nYkkQsYUfVo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> They were a much better band than I gave them credit for.
When I first saw STP on Letterman I thought the lead singer had Parkinsons. Amazing voice and one of my favorites growing up. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/niKJHH2MJ3w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
