damn.. some enterprising can collector can make some bank if they do a little snorkeling. I usually bring the bubba keg anyways so I kinda welcome the the change. I think they should worry about the water table more than the economy from losing tourist $$$'s .
it sucks to see it happen but i understand. I can't stand to see people just drop their cans into the water. It's very typical though...morons with no respect ruin it for others.
To whomever accidentally gave me rep while ironically calling me an idiot: I always have floated with a mesh trash bag for my empties, so no, I'm not one of the polluters. Like a couple others, I'm displeased that a great summer pastime is being severely curtailed because classless folks are just tossing cans. I wish the city had come up with a better ordinance than something this extreme - like mandating that floaters have/use mesh trash bags tied to each tube. Feel free to post your bashing in the thread.
Those photos don't surprise me. I keep expecting to see a new island rise up out of the river made entirely of beer cans. Y'all, it's not like they banned alcohol on the river. Just pack your stuff into "water" bottles and the like in advance and have a good time. If people can't stand these rules, maybe it will create a little more space in that overcrowded river for the rest of us.
as someone who has been going to new braunfels for almost 30 years i think its a necessary move - i havent been down there in years b/c its just a bunch of drunk dumbasses who trash what was once a beautiful river. maybe ill be able to start going back w/out worrying about the drunk frat-boy next to me puking in the river. its like when stern imposed the dress code for nba players on the sidelines - you were never required to wear a suit and tie, but people like iverson w/ doo-rags and crap ruined it for everyone else. harsh measures (dress code) was required b/c some people chose to not be responsible - same deal here. the a-holes always ruin it for the rest of us. iverson=dress code tubin' litterbugs=no bottles or cans on river terrorists=TSA grope-downs and body scans
So, this pretty much kills the tubing business then, doesn't it? What are the ways people can still drink on the river? I saw someone say keg, but you'd have to drink from the tap, I doubt they would allow red cups floating around. Sigg/Nalgen bottles filled with mixed drinks?
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Some creative and enterprising individual can capitalize on this.
is this just in new braunfels or does it cover the tubing off river road as well? i thought that was outside the city limits.
I would think it would only affect the Guadalupe in areas where it runs through New Braunfels. Most of the Guadalupe, and the area along river road, are not within New Braunfels city limits and probably aren't affected by the city ordinance.
The ban is looking DEAD!!! Back to cans! http://herald-zeitung.com/news/community_alert/article_231c89fa-8761-11e3-a2b7-001a4bcf887a.html
I totally missed this thread back when it first happened. I haven't been to New Braunfels in so long I never knew the littering had gotten that bad. I remember going plenty 15 or so years ago and other than the occasional bear can floating down the river I never noticed a huge litter problem. Apparently things got WAY worse over the course of that decade.
