you know I hate to say this because I don't want it to come off sounding mean. but he didn't look in great shape last I saw him. he was on some show doing a profile of him and some clipper players. I believe that's where he was coaching. I thought to myself, man he looks out of shape.
Great player, way too young. Unfortunately, you don't get a contract with Life. God Bless his family and close friends. A sad day to be sure for the sport.
My intro to DJ was the back to back Finals between the Sonics and Bullets. He was deceptively strong. I hated when they beat the Blazers in '77 but I grew to appreciate that Sonics team.
I always worried about DJ because he did not look healthy and it just wasn't his weight. He just looked ill in every recent pic I ever saw. Thanks for the battles with the Rockets DJ. RIP - you were one hell of a role player for some of the most elite players to ever play basketball on those Celtics teams.
He was coaching the Austin Toros and collapsed after/during practice. Cardiac arrest apparently. too bad, great player
Very sad news. He was doing good things with the Toros and looking to get an NBA gig at some point. RIP DJ
Bill Simmons wrote an article on him.. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/070222
What a great write-up by Simmons. Masterpiece. It also helps me understand why so many discount DJ's Sonic years and only remember him as a Celtic. For some reason I remember his Sonics days more vividly.
