Arrr. I. P. Cptn Phil, you were awesome. He was one of the people I wish I got to meet, along with M.Jackson and Billy Mays...I am guessing the next to go will be Charles Barkley or Stone Cold Steve Austin to kill my hopes even more.
See thats the thing, they show the King/Opilio seasons on the TV show, you you think they go out for 2 six-week trips then they are done. Not the case at all. I have family/friends in the business out of Seattle and to a FARRRRRRR less dangerous degree, have worked commercially in the Gulf. You might be home a total of a month out of the year, at the very most. Inbetween the trips themselves, you are fixing the boat, getting supply orders mandated, spends as much time w/ your family as possible, then off the the water again. You seriously eat what you get your hands on, and as much as possible to hold you over, you might only get chow 1-2 times per day. The risks are well known, they dont have the Low-Cal menu to chose from and there isnt any "Spin Classes" to take when you spend your life on the water. Its a passion, so without actually having that passion to be out on the water, gambling your time to make a living, you would never understand.
To answer some of your questions, I imagine the guy was on some sort of medication. In a previous season during the night at one point when Phil was asleep the guy he put at the wheel of the ship dozed off a bit and steered them into a huge wave. Knocked everyone out of their bunk and Phil slammed into something and hurt his ribs really badly. They had to go back into port and everyone assumed that all of Phil's ailments (chest hurting, coughing up blood) were a result of his chest/rib injuries, but when the doctor's did their evaluation it turned out he had passed a clot through his heart and just narrowly survived. He wasn't on the boat for the next King crab season and I think someone already mentioned that he came back for the next Opillio against his doctor's orders. It always kind of bothered me that his sons didn't make a bigger deal out of that. I imagine that is something that will haunt them (not that they could have stopped him, really...Phil seemed like a stubborn guy in a good way).
Yea...but he couldn't stop smoking because that is just part of the life for the passion of being a crab boat captain. That is how they cope. You and I wouldn't understand that. Is Sig still smoking?
RIP I didn't watch the show much but Captain Phil seemed like a good guy. This is one of the songs my band does and fitting for the death of a fisherman. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VGt4KKdYrL8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VGt4KKdYrL8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
This was a big joke in the episode when Sig was going to stop smoking. I think his crew told him he wouldn't last a week or something. He ended up not even making it 24 hours. He has always been a bit of a dick to his crew, I thought (and the editing of the show indicates he is a bit of a slave-driver), but when he was off his cigarettes it was amplified by 100...so he started smoking again so he would bite people's heads off.
I don't think Surf is discounting the passion or effort or pressures or anything like that. He is just noting, correctly, that these guys should (and, despite the hectic-ness of their day, could) try and live a more healthy lifestyle, ESPECIALLY given the pressures of the job. I certainly don't have nearly the life or death job these guys do, but everyone has job pressures and stress, most don't get significant vacation time, etc. It's a personal decision on how to live your lifestyle otherwise - smoke or don't smoke, exercise, try and eat healthy, etc. Anyway, RIP. I, too, enjoy this show.
Please manipulate it a little bit more, smartass. Tabacco is whole different issue in itself, I would get into it a little bit more but you would probably just pick out the segments of my post that bootyhurt you the most and then run with time. Personally, i think that mariners use tabacco, smoking/chewing, not only for the mere stress of the job, but also because your traveling 10-12 knots with nothing but water around you for 23 out of the 24 hours in a day, and just get bored.
Man, that really sucks. He's my favorite captain on DC and I feel really bad for his sons. I wonder how they're going to handle it on the show.
hey, rowdy...you should really learn how to take a joke. the forum seems to be having problems bringing up images but a wink implies a joke. your trying to tell us that the passion of being crab boat captain implies that they can find no balance in life. i completely disagree and, if they all take that approach, then they can enjoy their shortened lives with no chance of retirement. the namecalling was completely unnecessary and i'm not even going there with you.
It was sad to hear about. He got so many major warnings from his Doctors. Some people just don't know when to walk away though.
I thought the fact that I actually used the term, "Bootyhurt" would show that I wasnt trying to be malicious with you, simply lightening up a tender thread. My bad brother.
aight i'm feelin u now, bro. just hang loose, blood. Mama gonna bring back da medicini for da crab caps. Nada gotta die smackin down da crab on da cig binge on da high seas. Caps gotta hang loose...chill, thrill, and pill. Caps gotta get to docs and hang wit da seagulls smackin down some health food and workin some chops. Mama didn't raise no jive turkeys. Crab caps don't wanna play...crab caps don't get to play. Sheeet. Be seein dem on da flip side. Bling bling goin to da next blood in line. My terrible attempt at jive in trying to remain relevant to the times. Rather, a play on words borrowed from the movie "Airplane". In other words, I understand and RIP. Based on what Raven Lunatic was saying, it sounds like it all just caught up to him. Never know, though, it could be something as simple as missing a few days in taking his meds. Gotta stay up with that stuff and it's easy to miss a few days. But, it seems it was just his time.
Sad news. Cornelia Marie and Time Bandit are probably my two favorite boats. Will be interesting, albeit in a heartbreaking way, to see how the crew and the sons cope with the loss.
Yup. I couldn't believe he was standing there talking about how close he came to death after coughing up blood and then smoking cigarettes. I think he was smoking after the ER visit, too. That being said, his boat was one of my faves on that show. I love this show. His kids smoke, too. I wonder if this'll change anything. I doubt it.
I just found out today he passed away... This blows because I really enjoyed watching him. I thought IMO he was the best captain on that show. I've been hooked since the beginning. I just found this article today and I thought I would post it.... http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sho...est-catch-devoted-to-captain-phil-harris.html
I remember when it first happened they were showing a little in memory clip during every commercial break of a DC marathon. Made me tear up a little each time
