I know its not a teen flick like Breakfast Club or Ferris B. but St Elmo's Fire was a darn good movie for the 80's and wasn't that far off the teen flicks that came out during the period.

Ok...silly but serious question. I didn't hit my teens until the 90's, so did he really capture what the 80's were like for teens (suburb teens it seems), or did he define it/set the trend with his movies....i.e. my film does this and then kids start doing this.

Yeah, he did. When you watch Sixteen Candles or Teh Breakfast club.... teens were really like that.

When you watch a more recent movie like The Wedding Singer..... it's funny and all, but it's not really accurate.

I mean, in the 80's nobody really had the flock-of-seagulls haircut (except the lead singer of AFOS). The mindset and depiction of the characters in Hughes' films were spot on.

I wish that were true. I have distinct memories of a few people in my school with those hair cuts...and at least one famous person who I will not mention.

Well, nobody in my school had that haircut.

If you watch scenes like this from Sixteen Candles.... this is really how people acted, how they dressed, how they spoke...

I have my own teen memory that could fit one of his characters. It was a classic moment for me that could have fit in one of his films.

My teacher in intermediate school was going off on the class for something...and she ended it by saying "if you think you can do this in my class, then you've got another thing comin'". At that moment in time, I couldn't help myself and busted into Judas Priest out loud singing:

    "You've got another thing comin'!"

And, I was singing the guitar riffs part. At that moment, my teacher went off on me and threw me out of class. But, I just couldn't pass it up.

Another time...I was talking during a teacher lecture in science class. My teacher called me out and goes "you think you can teach this stuff...then you come up here and teach". So, I did just that. I got up from my desk...went up there next to her...put on my best teacher voice...grabbed her pointer...and said:

"Okay, class (pointing at a diagram). This is the such-and-such. Turn to page XX in your science books. We are going to be learning about XXXX."

I mean...the teacher's face turned bright red. She was freaking fuming at me. I got thrown out.

That's the type of stuff I identify with...and it kind of fits these types of characters this guy created. So, I can relate. lol. I had some rebellious moments in school. It was so boring...you almost had to do stuff like that.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is still my favorite movie of all-time.
