When it's the perfect price of 1 dollar even pirates buy... 10 dollar pizzas and 1 dollar movies is all you need in life.
Absolutely. Blockbuster had huge market hold and offerings in both movies AND video games. And didnt try to innovate in the MEDIA market? Part of it was probably media and TECHNOLOGY are tied together. They knew how to provide media quantity to watch, but werent good in the technical aspects of delivering media. Shows that the digital age doesnt discriminate. If you don't have a pulse on whats going on, even the biggest companies can get left behind. BB also didnt have "other" lewd content that some smaller video stores offered. The stuff behind the curtain door.
Netflix is overrated. I rather spend 5 bucks on a movie I can watch NOW rather than spend a buck waiting for a movie to come in the mail for a couple of days.
I used to think like this, but the streaming netflix totally changed my mind. Not all movies are on streaming, but there is so much on streaming that I can watch plenty of movies while other movies are being shipped. Also I never have to wait a couple of days. I always get it the very next day.
I'm surprised it's taken this long. I've always hated the experience of actually going to a BB store and looking for a DVD that I wanted. For me, Netflix streaming, iTunes or Amazon is the only way to go. Instant gratification any time I want it.
Blockbuster lost me as a customer 5-6 years ago. When I rented a movie there I returned it a day late so I had a late fee on my account which I believe totaled just under $2. Well, I didn't think it was a big deal as other rental places in town like Hollywood Video, Hasting's, etc. would just charge it to your account and let you pay your next visit. Oh hell no, not Blockbuster. Three weeks later they send me a letter stating I have a late charge and if it is not paid it will be sent to a collection agency. Seriously?!?!?! I went and paid the $2 and kindly handed in my membership card. **** YOU BV!!
Similar story...for some reason the girls were unable to return movies on the due dates, adn BB was entirely unreasonable compared to Hollywood. Unfortunately Hollywood is gone, I liked their game affiliate for trades and their employees were always willing to answer questions I had about new games...unlike BB. I dont really rent anymore, so its all a moot point to me, but I gotta admit I did enjoy my early Netflix sub(long before they had streaming) If we still rented movies, I would probably re-join NEtflix.
I do think Netflix and Rdbx are keys to BB demise...as someone pointed out earier, they played catch up after they realized their old model wasn't working and were to slow to adapt... BB should have beenthe one to pioneer the streaming/mail order dvds and kiosks...
Video Joe Showtime Video Remember when it was like $100 to buy a VHS movie? I literally remember the family that was the first on our block to have a VCR. And what a cool thing it was when my parents bought one.
i guess i don't have enough time to watch movies for it even to matter. usually i keep a movie 5 days to a week before i'm able to get to it anyway.
I remember when movies cost that much and thinking back, if my Dad had bought The Goonies for $100, he'd have saved a lot of money. I had to have rented it a million times.
Blockbuster relished in killing Mom and Pop stores for years. Now they are getting killed by faster & better competition. I'm glad to see that what goes around comes around.
I think movies on demand did more to kill Blockbuster than Netflix. I don't watch a ton of movies, but if I do want to see one, that's usually how I go about it... three clicks of my remote. If I do happen to want to get out of the house or rent a TV series, I go to MOVIES! The Store on Richmond. Great little place in Montrose; the owner is always there and very friendly. I don't play games, so that's not an issue for me.
Ironically, guess which 2 companies came up with this idea 10 years ago: Spoiler Blockbuster and Enron. http://www.forbes.com/2000/07/20/mu4.html
