Were there any riots or Hooliganism anywhere in the country?

    Chicago Rally Crowd Peaceful, Jubilant

It was a safe celebration in Grant Park last night, with approximately 240,000 spectators on hand to witness history in the making.

"Noone who heard it will ever forget the tidal wave of sound welling from the depths of the crowd that greeted the news that Mr. Obama had won," the BBC reported.

With 65,000 tickets distributed to the main event at Hutchinson Field, the remainder of the participants gathered to the north at Butler Field, where Jumbotron screens allowed them to witness President-elect Barack Obama's acceptance speech.

The crowd was smaller than had been anticipated, but the city's police and fire department were prepared for whatever the night might have brought on.

In the end, though, it was a thoughtful, solemn speech by Obama that brought the crowds to their feet and tears to their eyes.

"I think it's a great day for our country," one woman said. "It's a beautiful day. I think the stars aligned and it turned out perfect."

Another woman in the crowd, wearing a bright blue Obama cap, thanked God for allowing her to be part of the history-making event.

"Thank you, Jesus," she said several times. Her words were uttered elsewhere, in the park and in American homes where an acute awareness of the country's issues of racism made the day a black man would be elected to the White House hard to imagine.

It was a peaceful exit at the end of the night, with only cheers of joy accompanying the crowd's departure.

No arrests were made at Grant Park, police said. The Chicago Fire Department transported only seven people to area hospitals for various minor injuries.

Elsewhere in the city, shots were fired when Obama was named the president-elect. The Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday that people on the West Side were "literally dancing in the streets."

"It was a night of celebration, not widespread violence," the paper said.

    Good night for all

Police: No arrests at Obama street parties

No body was arrested at Obama victory rallies that spilled into Seattle streets Tuesday night and lasted into Wednesday morning, Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt said during a 1:45 a.m. briefing.

"The mood was very celebratory," she said of two major, spontaneous victory rallies, "and there were no incidents."

One street party was on concentrated in the 1500 block of First Avenue, near The Showbox. Hundreds of people who attended The Stranger's election party there went into the street, shouting chants that included "U.S.A!"

Bike officers from the West Precinct were on hand to monitor the crowd. The crowds halted traffic on First Avenue, and police blocked parts of Pike Street and other streets late Tuesday night in crowd control efforts.

The second street party was on Capitol Hill, where police estimated 3,500 people partied near the intersection of Broadway and East Pine Street.

"Again," Witt said, "this was a pretty peaceful gathering

Isnt it funny how when Obama wins how peaceful yet joyous celebrations are. But when a sports hockey team or soccer team wins fans turn and burn cars over. Interesting.

Certain people on this bbs are REAL QUIET

"Near-riot" in Akron, Ohio bar: http://www.ohio.com/news/break_news/33900454.html

    [rquoter]
Bouncer shot at downtown Akron bar after Obama party
    By Beacon Journal staff

    POSTED: 11:58 a.m. EST, Nov 05, 2008

Akron police say a bouncer was shot and a near-riot exploded early this morning following a Barack Obama celebration inside a downtown bar.

The 36-year-old bouncer at The Lounge on Paul Williams Avenue was shot twice and was being treated at Akron General Medical Center.

The shooter, who fled the area after the shooting, has not been identified.

After the shots were fired at about 1 a.m., a large crowd gathered outside the bar, which is located in a small strip to the west of Main Street near Exchange Street.

About a dozen police units responded and used pepper spray to disperse the crowd. There were no other injuries and no arrests were made.

Capt. Dan Zampelli said the bar was hosting an Obama party and had promised free drinks to patrons for every state the Democratic presidential candidate won during Tuesday's election.

The Akron Department of Public Safety informed the bar management that liquor license holders are prohibited from distributing free drinks. The bar was cited by the safety officials for offering the drinks, Zampelli said.
