Verlander didn't have his surgery until end of September last year. I don't think anyone has any idea at this point whether he'll pitch at all this season.
Say what you want about Jim Crane, but he’s not afraid to open his pocketbook to better his team’s chances at winning a World Series. The two other owners in Houston could learn a lot from him.
Not counting on Verlander. Think Odorizzi maintains a slightly above average rotation and strengthens our depth because last year, we almost screwed ourselves in the playoffs. Javier should be starting.
Hoping we get 2019 Odorizzi, but just eating innings (though he's been more healthy than a guy that goes 7) would be good.
Nice signing! Not a fan of the player option but gives him reason to earn it. At least we have one team in Houston that can contend in their sport.
My guess is the player option is specifically designed so he will decline it. We will not know until terms are released, but I suspect it allows the Astros to reduce his AAV enough for the Astros to stay under the luxury tax
Of Odorizzi's 30 starts in 2019 .. he allowed 5 or more runs only twice Astros averaged 4.65 runs per game in 2020 Take into account attrition and the MLB de-juicing baseballs, Astros can be comfortably expected to do 4+ runs per game This is a winning move by the Astros. He's not an ace, but he will put the offense in position to win almost all of his starts. He has had a slew of games where he walks 3-4 batters a game. If he can keep the walks down and the offense picks him up .. I can see Odorizzi finish with 16 to 18 wins.
Taking a liner off the ribs and some blister issues in his first start back is a common thing for pitchers in ST when they first start throwing. Nothing structurally wrong with his arm/shoulder isn’t a pause for concern.
Heck, I think I would take 2018 JV, Cole, Morton, Keuchel and LMJ. Although JV and Cole were just on a completely different level in 2019.
I agree with what someone already said: if you told fans back in October that the offseason additions would be: Odorizzi, Brantley, Castro, Baez, and Stanek, with NRIs for Souza and Cishek, I think most of us would have considered that a pretty good offseason. (Of course if you'd told us Framber and Whitley would join Verlander as out for the season, well...)
Random, I guess I’ve always associated recovery from TJ surgery as your arm constantly resting, it bugs me seeing JV playing golf but I guess that’s okay? Enlightenment welcome
Shohei Ohtani played as a DH while recovering. It's the throwing motion that seems to be what has to stay rested.
