Are you serious. What if he told them today I'm retiring 30 days from today. I understand the people who say he should have told them earlier, but giving them notice doesn't make a difference.
I don't blame him for retiring, but he is wrong for screwing the Dolphins by retiring at the last minute before training camp. If he knew he didn't want to play anymore or had doubts he could have let them know before the draft and free agency. Definitely doesn't hurt the Texans chances though.
I see Jorge, so you oppose at will employment in favor of retirement for cause? He has the option to quit at any time -- are you saying that labor markets should be more tightly regulated as to take away this option? How very inefficient of you. , sorry there Clarence Darrow, if he failed to honor his contract, then why don't the Dolphins sue him for breach? Oh, right, the terms of the agreement allow him to retire at any time-- making you wrong.
pgabriel .. I worded that wrong.. after I wrote it I was afraid it might come out wrong. I meant it as the whole point is you should give your job 30 days notice so they have time to find a replacement.. as in Ricky should have told them at least 30 days before camp started to give them a little time. So no I did'nt mean tell them he is retiring in 30 days.. my point was that most jobs expect you to give them a little notice to find a replacement and ricky should have given them some notice before the season started.. my fault for wording that wrong
Watch "No Retirement" clauses start being built into big star contracts from now on.. and on a sad note.. I just realized my fantasy football keeper team (i.e. the players he paid for in an auction back 4 years ago, I still own) was based around Ricky Williams. Wtf.
Absolutely false, false, false. Ever seen Jerry McGuire? In my industry, you give NO notice. Hell, you tell your employer you still work there even when you don't, in some cases. It all depends on your field. As for Ricky, I can imagine any running back getting scared after seeing Earl. His timing was attrocious, however. Ricky simply proved he is an idiot. Or he's evil.
I heard Dan thebastard on the radio today and it said that Ricky had been tlaking about this all offseason, and that the dolphins were aware of that yet didn't take him seriously. Their fault.
Serious question here. Would you have personally taken him seriously??? I mean, how many 27 year old athletes, who are one of the best in the game at their position, retire???
Well, while he is younger than J. Brown & B Sanders & R. Smith, it doesn't take a psychoanalyst to know that Ricky didn't have the same mindset as most of his fellow NFL players -- that much was obvious. Hence he has/had different goals; not money or bling or chicks, but drivning a beatup old VW around the australlian outback and that kind of thing. So I think the dolphins were a litte asleep at the switch here.
I would have told him to hold off on going public with his decision and to take time to think about it. To me, it seems like he did this. Friends/family/agent/team executives/coaches probably told him to wait until the last possible moment to announce his decision... probably thinking he would change his mind. Well guess what? He didn't. And he waited until the last possible minute, giving himself enough time to contemplate his decision. It all makes sense to me. He's not in the wrong (if the aforementioned scenario is true, and it does seem likely that its true. Why wouldn't Dolphins coaches and execs tell him to delay his decision and to think about it over the summer? They expected him to change his mind, but he didn't, and now they're going to spin it like he is at fault)
Not necessarily. RW showed up to every offseason workout and meeting, even though some of those are voluntary. If Im his boss, that tells me he is not serious about retiring.
I'm sure there is a great deal more to this story than Ricky just being tired of playing football. I'm a big fan of Williams (he was my franchise player) so i'm curious to see how this works out over the next few months. Does anyone honestly think there isn't more to this retirement business? I think Ricky will be playing somewhere else next season…
Dan thebastard said that he showed up for those because he didn't want to let his teammates down, but that he personally didn't want to play and that it was known to managment that it was something he was considering.
In hindsight, it would have been more beneficial to RW's character had he let his teamates down during minicamp instead of a few days before training camp started. Also might have made the Dolphins consider his retirement threats a lil more seriously.
When did that start? Whenever I was working, it was always two weeks. (Hence the term "two weeks notice". It's not just a mediocre Sandra Bullock movie). It wasn't very curteous to wait until so late to officially retire. But aside from that, I have no quibble with his decision. It sucks if you're a fan of that team, of course.
