My thoughts exactly. I had the same sort of "wow" with Davis's genius move as when I first saw someone toss an inbounds pass of an opponent's backside, many many years ago.
Thanks for posting this. When I heard the story I was surprised that the NBA didn't have a rule against shooting on the basket you're supposed to defend. I had it in high school. But, I guess they do. Still, a great foul.
Had it been any other team I would be upset but were talking about the JAZZ here! Whats better than seeing the Jazz get blown out and embarassed?
still. The move was funny as helll but it was classless. dude had 6 secs left. atleast try to attempt like u are trying. All and all i had a good laugh
So, the team should award Davis for the most creative play of the year! BTW, why didn't they mention about David Robinson's scoring title some years back when he scored 70 points in the final game to edge Shaq for the scoring title?
With how crappy Cleveland has played this year, perhaps shooting at the opponent's basket has been the norm, rather than the exception to the rule.
Ricky Davis did a tasteless thing which wasn't right.Sloan had the right to get mad but although he brings toughness and fundamentals, his team flops, and elbow players all the time and that isn't right either.
Exactly, ZRB. Who cares? Nobody outside of Salt Lake and Cleveland cares about these two teams at all. It's only a game, in Cleveland, that the Cavs mercifully won... Damn, 6 second is enough time to go to your own basket.
What's the point of doing that? It's not like 1 triple double in your resume would elevate you to the star status and get you more salary/publicity/edorsement money. Well it actually got him some publicity now but it's bad publicity.
The absolutely stupidest sporst move I have ever seen was in baseball...and the problem is I can't remember who it was...it was a tie game with the bases loaded in the 9th...and on an 0-2 count, the pitcher hits the batter....and the batter charges the mound! I honestly couldn't believe it...blew my mind...Ron Gant maybe? I don't know, but whoever it was gets my idiot award for life...
Also, I disagree with what Sloan said - Davis didn't try to embarass the Jazz, the Jazz were already significantly embarassed by getting destroyed by what is quite possible the worst team in the league. Teams that play like crap for 47 minutes shouldn't get pissed when another team shows them up in the 48th - try not playing like crap for 47 minutes first.
Yeah, i would have to agree with you on that one. The pitcher is such an idiot!! j/k. Yeah, that could possibly take the cake as the dumbest move.
You put it best, Poodle4...it's kind of like last year when Dan Langhi got a dunk at the buzzer in Philly last year and we won by 25. Stevie and Larry Brown got in a shouting match.
I prefer to see it the other way and give credit to the players who never thought about selflessly and classlessly padding their statistics by showing up the opposing team in the waning seconds of a meaningless game. Kudos to the rest of the league for never considering to stoop so low.
that should say selfishly, not selflessly (yes i see the irony and stupidity in my switching of the words!)
Looks like he isn't going to get squat.. http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0317/1525160.html Cavs: Davis' embarrassment punishment enough CLEVELAND -- Ricky Davis will not be fined by Cavaliers coach Keith Smart, who said Monday that embarrassment is punishment enough for the stunt against the Utah Jazz. “ He has to live with what he did. Wherever he goes, people will remember it. ” — Cavs coach Keith Smart "The deed is done," Smart said after a morning practice. "What good would it do to slap him on the wrist? He has to live with what he did. Wherever he goes, people will remember it." Davis attempted to pad his statistics during a 122-95 victory over the Utah Jazz on Sunday. To get his first career triple-double in the final seconds of the lowly Cavs' biggest win of the season, Davis purposely missed a shot at the wrong basket and grabbed the rebound, thinking it was his 10th. Davis, the team's scoring leader, was fouled hard by the Jazz's DeShawn Stevenson, angered that his club was being mocked. Davis made the two free throws to finish with 28 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. "No comment," the usually exuberant Davis said as he left practice Monday. Davis apparently did not know that his stunt backfired even without Stevenson fouling him. The rulebook states: "It is a violation for a player to attempt a field goal at an opponent's basket. The opposing team gets the ball." Davis did not get a shot attempt or his rebound. "I talked with Ricky after the game," Smart said. "The thing is, one tiny moment ruined the team's most successful game. Ricky had his finest game as far as blending in with his teammates. None of that will be remembered, but what he did will follow him always." Smart said he and Cavaliers players were embarrassed. "I felt very, very bad and before Ricky shot the free throws -- I went and apologized," said Smart, who walked over to an incensed Utah coach Jerry Sloan. Davis signed a six-year, $34 million contract before the season. The 6-foot-7 guard is averaging 20.7 points and is the first player in team history to record three 40-plus scoring games in a season. Davis also had two run-ins with former coach John Lucas, fired Jan. 20 after a 17-point loss at Utah. Lucas suspended Davis for two games this season for arguing with teammates and being selfish. The win was just the second in 15 games for the Cavaliers, who have a league-worst 12-53 record. Cleveland needs four wins in its final 17 games to avoid tying the franchise's worst mark of 15-67, set in the inaugural season of 1970-71 and matched in 1981-82.
I don't think it was a "fineable" offense. Just plain stupid. I think his looking foolish is punishment enough.
this just means hes gona get hacked like a mother for the rest of his life a couple flagrants and hell learn his leason
