Their enrollment dropped, along with other inner city schools. Yates is now scared of 5A teams, lol. The hilarity of some of the comments in this thread. Yes, I'm sure the team that's arguably the best in the country in basketball is scared of playing bigger schools in TX. This is not TX HS football that we are talking about.

Edit: And congrats to Bush as well. I didn't realize they were a Houston area team.

Their enrollment isn't enough for 5A. Do some research.

Maybe they got dropped because their enrollment dipped below 5A standards. You have an article that says they petitioned to moved down to 4A?

So any team in the lower division that runs the table and routinely beats down its opponent has to petition to move up to 5A to claim legitimacy to it's State Title and remove the vaunted bbs clutchfans average joe schmoe men of doubt asterisk. Gotcha.

You are hilarious. Enrollment is one thing but schools can petition to play up one class.

It's really too bad that JY loses so much 3rd Ward talent (academically and athletically) to other schools.

    You don't understand do you.
If you have a good team, why don't you like to play against other good teams?

Wouldn't that make them lose their historical ties/games with other schools that are still 4A, such as the Yates/Washington rivalry (in name only, as they always kick our butts)?

So what 5A team do you think could beat Yates?

Edit: As far as playing good teams, they beat all comers in two out of state tournaments. I guess these 5A TX schools were better than the ones there?

How can you accuse a team of ducking good competition when they decided to play in two out of state tournaments against top teams?

Edit 2: I just looked at some national ranking (the first ones that popped up under a google search). I don't see the teams Yates beat in the top 25, so I can't say they were all "top teams", even though I don't see these tourneys extending invites to scrub teams. Those games were closer as well, so I'm going to assume the teams were pretty good.

This MaxPreps site has Yates 31. It has Bush, the 5A champ, #14. That's a big gap IMO. I don't know how much HS ball you watch. I'm assuming it's not as much as the folks that complie these rankings.

If they're so good, why didn't Yates petition to play the Lakers!!

4A doesn't have good teams? What makes you think that 5A automatically has the better talent when the original qualifier is total student enrollment? And we're talking about basketball, which only needs to find 12-15 players as opposed to football.

Reread my statement about the weight class divisions in boxing, who says you have to be in the top weight division to be considered the best?

Maybe if Morey was the school's principal and Chuck Norris was an alumni.

Schools can petition to move up a level but CANNOT request to move down as was suggested previously. The problem with moving up as Icehouse pointed out was that all of their current rivalries would no longer exist.

So this is valued more than playing good competition all year round?
BTW, they can always schedule to play the schools they want to play as out-of-district games.
I don't care if Yates can beat every team in 5A or not. What we do know is, in general, 5A schools are better than 4A. If Yates want better competition for themselves, just play 5A.

Why do you think they divide into classes?

4A has many good teams, and then they have teams like Lee. If you want to set record and boast about it, play them again.

Comparison to weight classes in boxing is the worst thing you could do.

If you do that in BB, you should group teams whose centers are shorter than, let's say, 6'-2, together, or teams whose average height is less than 5'-10 together.

Then, can you claim that the team who wins the class with shortest avg height the best team?

Can't these teams schedule to play Yates if what you say is true? So how do you know the other teams aren't ducking? Have you talked to anyone from HISD or these schools? If teams can do this, then why switch to 5A? Why not just schedule tougher teams?

The weight, just like enrollment, only determines what class you will fight in. Otherwise, are you going to tell me Klitschko is a better pound for pound fighter then Pacquio?

If you look at the 4A and 5A Houston area District alignments, you'll notice most of the schools align themselves with neighboring HS that they have natural rivalries with, and a short travel to each other. Doesn't really makes sense for Yates to petition to get into 5A District 23 which are Fort Bend Schools. They have natural rivalries with the other inner city Houston area HS, so that's why they are in the same 4A district with those others.
