    This is like journalism 101....

The Wapo article is good. It starts by comparing Perry's rating to Perry's 10 year record...and uses Obama's approval as a reference point (correctly...again... noting that their approval ratings are the same). The Chron one, on the other hand, opens by comparing Perry's rating to Obama's (a false comparison) and also interprets the poll results incorrectly. Had you read the Wapo one first, I don't think you conclude as readily that Obama is more popular then Perry....but that's the impression the Chron one gives. We also don't get into the whole margin of error bit -- which is kind of important if you're interpreting polls.

As to the fundamental point of the article (I'm guessing it's that Perry's approval took a hit after his presidential run)...I'm not convinced a 40% approval rating so soon after being humiliated on the national stage is necessarily the end of his political career...regardless of what a 69YO Leno watcher might think (and she's probably one of Leno's younger viewers..).

    But here's hoping.

the chronicle article isn't relying on barack, its also a reference point. you're arguing over margin of error, and the article isn't hanging its hat on the comparison. its hanging its hat on the fall, just as wapo's. you're being ridiculously anal about the way the chronicle article is written. if the article says the approval ratings are the same it doesn't change anything

edit: there are several reference points including his ten point drop since a year ago and his drops among republicans

Not that this is similar, but didn't Rocky stay in Albany for a good decade or so after losing to Goldwater?

I don't know what the last page and a half of debate about it is, but I've seen 3-4 major media outlets this PM report the "Perry less popular in TX than Obama" story in precisely those terms (independently - not using the wire headline).

Maybe a lot of them flunked J-lism 101.

Let me play judoka. I think Oklahoma is more Republican. I think it is a bit extreme to say all Christians in Republicans in Texas or even all Republicans in TX think Obama is actually the anti-Christ.:)

I'm not so convinced that Perry is done either. With the passage of time, the sting will wane, his scores will improve, and he'll be fine in an election. But, if he does go down, I think it'd be to a Republican challenger.

Perry presidential security cost taxpayers $800,000

Texas taxpayers were billed almost $800,000 in travel costs for a security detail to travel with Gov. Rick Perry largely on out-of-state events tied to his presidential campaign from September through November, state figures show.

if his political career is, indeed, done, that was money well spent.
