If yao is able to play inside/outside, he ill be even harder to defend. if you triple team him in the low post, he'll kill you on the primeter. also with he's passing ability, he can easily create so many open looks for the likes of scola and battier and our other fringe star players.

That's exactly the point! I don't know why people are so hell bent on just parking him in the low post. Having a variety of options keeps the defender guessing, making it a lot easier for you to score. Why else did you think Yao was blocked so many times by Okur and AK47.

I don't think there would be much of a difference between a Yao Ming that score 20/10/5 over a Yao Ming that scores 25/9.4/2

The difference is that Yao would get easier shots. So would his teamates. And that would translate into more wins for the team.

If you want to think about it, the think about it this way. 5X2=10+20=30 (for the 20/10/5) and 2X2=4+25=29 (for the 25/9.4/2) Practically Identical, for any of you worried about statistics.

Rebounds may take an effect. As it was last season 22% Yao's rebounds were offensive. If he's playing further away from the basket, I can see this total go down.

However, If he maintains his strenght longer, then he could be more effective on the defensive rebounds.

Adelman doesn't want Yao promarily in the high post offense. He came here to add another element to the team and to yao's game. The rockets were predictable last season in the playoffs because teams had time to prepare and take yao away from the low post by pushing and shoving him out of psoition, along with ticky tack 3 seconds which made it difficult for yao to score as well as any other houston rocket that were standing there watching. You have to be able to mix things up and not allow the defense to gauge in on what you are doing so easily. Just look at the spurs, over the last 3 seasons Greg popovich borrowed some of the Sacramento kings (rick adelman coached ) motion offense schemes. Teams were pushing tim duncan out of the post and you saw this during this years playoffs and to get everyone else going popovich brings tim out to the high post to open things up for penetration and allow everyone else space to work. They did this against the suns when kurt thomas was man handling duncan and the refs didn't call the fouls,so greg popovich went into some motion bringing tim duncan out to the high post which open the game up fro ginoblii to attack and the rest of the team some easy layups and open looks.

Yao will be used as a passer and playmaker not just camped in the post while everybody stands around and either he doesn't get the low post entry pass or they call three seconds or we just wait for yao to get double teamed or he just struggles to get good position and get his shot off in crunch time in the playoffs, waisting another 24 seconds. You bring yao out free throw line high post to open things up so teams can't just lock in on mcgrady and the other 3 players. Mcgrady's points dropped and he was easily defended because of spacing issues. Tracy didn't have the room to operate because you have everybody standing around with no movement while he throws it in to yao or he is trying to get to the basket and get his shot off against a match up junk defense going 1 on 3-5. The rest of the team become usless and you end up playing the series 2 on 5 a large part of the game.

Wilt went through the same thing when the 71'72 lakers hired bill sharman. Sharman told wilt he would need to be more of a playmaker and get other guy's involved which would make everyone a threat and the team would win more. They went on to win 33 straight games and eventually winning the championship. You are not going to advance playing 2 on 5

    • In his first season with Sacramento in 2003-04, played in 72 games and started 53 games, averaged 14.1 ppg., a career best 10.3 rpg., 4.3 apg., 1.19 bpg., shot 51.0 percent and 77.8 percent free throw from the foul line.

Named an NBA All-Star in 2004 and recorded eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, and added three rebounds in 10 minutes of action.

Brad miller had his best all around season and was an all star under adleman.

like zacateas said, yao averaged 2 assists. that means two or three points he created for his teamates. you add that to his ppg average thats 29 or 31 points. if yao's in the high post and averages 5 assists, thats likely 10 points. and like you said in your first post (yao_fan_2007) if yao scores 5 points per game less, that'll mean he would average 20 points, with the 10 points he got off of the assits which would be 30 points. yao used less stamina, due to not always (note always, i'm not saying he will never ever go to the low post) going down low, and gettin banged by physical players. and with the extra stamina, yao will help us even more. maybe by more rebounds, or playing great defense. 20-13-5 is not bad. not bad at all...

PRYUEN, thanks again for a wonderful article, you are a star....in fact 5 of em.

    :D

    Clutch,

I just want to go on record of being in favor of banning anyone who is more interested in individual stats than team success.

This is a HOUSTON ROCKETS fan board......the team always comes first.

I actually think he will get more rebounds coming in from the top of the FT line. The problem with Yao camping in the low post, is that he usually boxed out before the shot.

Numerical superiority is not necessarily an indicator of the truth lying in a particular position. The solution to this is naturally to provide the superior argument. Calling "circlejerk" is a good way to lose both the argument and posting privileges. :D

Anyway good read as usual mr pry :)

Especially anyone who claims that he/she doesn't care if Rockets win or lose.

I find debating with this kind of poster is extremely pointless and only wastes resources - your time and network bandwidth/database storage of our system, eventually costs Clutch more money.

This is simply not true; the Jazz had one defender on T-Mac and another defender shaded towards him. They did not double Yao either; they guarded him with Okur and sent another defender to double after the second dribble. Neither Yao nor T-Mac were really doubled, this is why the role players had trouble.

    Co-signed. Rockets Wins >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yao's stats.

Besides, someone should probably look up the Hall of Fame career of Bill Walton -- the best passing big man in NBA history.

I could care less if Yao ppg avg dips slightly. As one poster acknowlegded, that could be made up for by an increase in assists per game.

To that Yao fan character...you sound like a fool. You might think you are the best Yao fan but you are truely one of the worst Rockets fans. Do you think that people in SA care that Duncan has been right around 20 ppg for the last 4 seasons? Its all about the ring...nothing else.

As he said, Adelman will use Yao in the low post. He just doesn't want to be predictable. Yao had crazy turnover problem and hopefully the new system will help with that. Both Mac and Yao have work to do...TMac needs to increase his shooting %, Yao needs to work on his D and turnovers.

This statement is pretty much accurate except for the last sentence. His fg% IS one of the components that makes Yao such a good player. His height gives him a good vantage point for increased court vision and he is smart enough to use it well. That part of his offensive game was missing under JVG's reign.

A 90% FT rate means his FG% from the same distance (12-15ft) is probably pretty good too. I won't guess a number but chances are its the best or close to it in the lineup, especially if its a good open shot. Even with one man on him at 7'6 he could probably get a clean look off a screen. I'm all for him taking that open shot, but if its not available, either because of good D, or a double team, he is capable enough to find the open man.

Whether its people cutting to the rim (T-Mac, Bonzi, James, Snyder), underneath (Hayes, Scola) or back outside (T-Mac, Alston, Head). Chances are he'll find whoevers open and up his assist numbers.

Out of the high post he can set screens, find some open space or roll to the basket. He doesn't haven't to handle the ball just his presence out there would open things up. I'm not suggesting he finds a home there, if the man is capable of having success in the low post AND the high post, why underutilize him for the sake of a higher fg%?

If you don't think he's capable of successfully operating him from the high post then you're selling him short.

I'm still skeptical that Yao can excel in the high post. I think you need to have some ball handling skills to be a real threat there. Yao's options with the ball will only be to pass or take a slow-release set shot (covered). I don't expect this to be a significant component of our offense next season.

Look, yao_fan_2007 just wants to make sure Yao maximizes his potential and succeeds- nothing wrong with that (though I would seriously question his assertion about Yao "faking" an injury- that's pretty absurd).

Yao_Fan_2007: Great players find a way to get their points regardless of the system. Shaq played in 2 different systems, so did Hakeem, so did Ewing, so did Jordan, so did Dirk, etc, etc. Good players can be affected by coaching changes, great players very rarely are. Figure it this way, Yao is good for about 10 points per game on offensive rebound put-backs, someone else grabbing an offensive rebound and passing it to Yao for the slam, etc. Then, you can figure he's going to get at least 6 trips to the free throw line every game, so you can throw in another 10 there. So, without any kind of coaching strategy, he's going to have at least 20 points. Now, to think that Yao won't be in any other position to score an additional 6-10 points per game is absurd. Yao, Kobe, Tracy, LeBron, Wade, Ray Allen, Dirk- all these players find a way, regardless of the system.

I suppose you've forgotten some of the buzzer beaters Yao hit last year. They were jumpers and I don't really recall any slow-release set shots.
