According to the Chronicle article, we will be sticking to the 4-3, so that rules out a number of candidates. You also have to remember that Kubiak is one of the lowest paid head coaches in the league, lower than a few coordinators, so it may be hard to lure a top coordinator without giving Kubiak a new deal, which isn't going to happen this offseason.
Surprised they got rid of Jon Hoke. I mean, I didn't necessarily think the guy was doing a great job, but you always heard of how highly he was regarded around the league and how he was interviewed (or requested to be interviewed) for other positions.
Yeah he was getting some interviews, but our secondary has been bad for too long to keep him around IMO. To me it doesn't seem like our players have developed much either, Dunta excluded.
Probably a collateral hit, you fire the DC, you probably want to let the new DC pick his assistants...
WOW! That was fast! Thankgod! WHOOOOOOOO! Here's to hoping they will have an improved defense next season, like the offense this season.
Unless THE ABSOLUTE BEST candidate can turn around the defense with the 3-4, I agree with the Texans brass, no overhaul of schemes, find some experienced successful people to coordinate the existing systems. Mario's legit now, but we saw how moving him around affected his play at first. Why change things up for him again? No trading 1st day picks either thinking you're one player away (though thats a possibility more than before).
Thank the heavens the Texans are moving in the right direction by firing those idiots. Would like Frank Bush to get a shot at this since he's familiar w/ this D and he was courted to be the DC in the first place.
YES WE CAN!!!! I do get the sense that Kubiak's hand was forced on this and he wasn't especially happy about it. Oh well. Loyalty has its limits. I wouldn't agree, as Johnny Holland (LBs coach) was retained. Looks like a simple case of the Texans releasing those in charge of the main areas of disappointment: D-Line and secondary. Gregg Williams is unlikely due to salary demands, unless McNair gives Kubiak a raise/extension at the same time (not totally unrealistic - let's not forget how he gave Carr that 3 year/$24M deal).
Smith gone and Deke re-signed? We have another contender for best clutchfan day of 2008! If I see agressive blitzing in the first half of the season I may wet my pants
Horrible choices. you see how the teams these guys had were all losing badly the past few years? And Manginis an offensive minded coach. I believe he was O coord for Pats, not D. Gregg Williams is a good choice however
This sets up the most anxious offseason in Texans history. Next year is a "playoffs or bust" make-or-break year for the team and Kubiak. The weak schedule takes away any excuses. They should be 10-6 or 11-5.
Thank god. Now we just have to get a top of the line d cordinator, as well as some top draft picks on that side of the ball, and were in the playoffs.
