...I think your confusing San Antonio with Austin. Anybody who wanted to live in a gay community wouldn't stay in San Antonio with Austin so close.

Wow - I missed this....what is the Spurs cap situation, this might actually be bad for them, they lose an expiring $15 million dollar contract.

It will be even worse when he signs with the Mavs and starts catching those lobs from Kidd again.

Jefferson desperately wanted to get out of SA. Maybe he signs a one year contract to try and get his value back over $10 million/year

If it puts the Spurs under the Lux tax and a bit under the cap, they could also lose their MLE right?

Which would screw them in trying to get Splitter.

That's what I was thinking about. Getting $4m in capspace and losing a $5.5m MLE is bad for the team.

Of course, it might help them get Splitter on a cheaper contract.

If that's the case they'll have the option of choosing between their cap space or the MLE.

I suspect there is some sort of promise from the Spurs to re-sign him at in inflated figure such as $25 million over 3 years or something like that, where they can trade him in a package for somebody else.

A visit to Larry Coon's FAQ confirms what you say. They'd have a cap-hold on the MLE to push them over the limit (assuming the payroll amount quoted earlier didn't include cap-holds for exceptions), and keep the MLE in force. They could choose to renounce the cap-hold, but would not, of course.

Maybe the guy was miserable and wanted to go and produce better. Everyone always says its about the money, but when you're playing poor, money means nothing.

Richard Jefferson doesn’t have a deal with the San Antonio Spurs and would prefer to return to the New York area to play for the Knicks or Nets, league sources told Y! Sports.

Jefferson is seeking a multiyear contract that averages in the range of $8 million-$10 million, sources said. He opted out of the $15 million final season of his contract with the Spurs on Tuesday.

Jefferson has built a good relationship with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, but doesn’t think the team’s system best fits his skills.

The Spurs could still try to sign Jefferson to a contract that lowers their luxury-tax hit, depending on what other options they find in free agency.

he averaged 19.6 ppg 2 years ago. and 12.6 this year, but mostly because he got less shots. both years he had a 55% true shooting percentage. split the difference and a 16 ppg player with reasonable efficiency is only worth $2M/yr?

If they want to do S&T, 15Mil expiring is a big asset.
Contending teams commit to salaries. Even if the player
is bad, you can still exchange for a better one when the
contract is up. Once you lose that salary, you don't have anything to exchange for and you are still over the cap or close to. It takes years to absorb salaries and build contenders.

He definitely let the Spurs off the hook this year. Now Spurs can go find a very good player to replace him for maybe with cheaper money...

Spurs and Richard Jefferson's agent have discussed a new deal, but nothing in works. RJ would love return to NY-area, but NJ not interested.
