That's ironic, being how the one team to beat Ohio State this year was....(silence for dramatic effect...) ILLINOIS. Guess what type of offensive scheme they run? (Cue Jeopardy music....) THE SPREAD OPTION. Guess who thrashed Ohio State last year in the BCS Title game? Yep, the Florida Gators that also implement the spread offense in a large part of their gameplan. Nice point, Ziggy. Or not....
Defensive Coordinator will be the key. The offense? We'll see. I hope they don't run option crap. Go blue.
And I do think this hire has some negative impact on recruiting top notch QB and WRs who set their eyes in playing the the pro.
When Rich Rod was at Tulane, he worked with a purely pocket passer in Shaun King, throwing 50 times a game at times. King made the NFL. Rich Rod sets a scheme based on personnel and he's never had the resources/talent that is now available to him now. For example, Pat White was a two star recruit.
Uhh, sure.... NATION'S NO. 1 RECRUIT: Vince Young-eqsque QB says, 'Add Michigan to my list' -Detroit Free Press, December 16, 2007
So Michigan is now gonna play spread option. It is going to something to watch especially with the kind of talent Wolverines can recruit every year. WVU never had the kind of recruiting prestige to pull top level talent but they still managed well with White and Slaton. Spread offense is the future of the of game and beginning to get national attention with the success of programs like Mizzou, Oregon and Hawaii. I still believe you need a guy like Vince Young to win a title with this type of system but it is good to see teams take it serious now.
Michigan will run an offense that best suits the personnel that they have. Rodriguez is not strictly a spread option OC.
LOL, sure, I would be more than happy to hear that. Actually, I'm more of thinking about Tom Brady like players, who is one of my favorite Michigan QB but unfortunately has to share QB duty with that Drew Hanson guy in his senior year. Michigan has a pretty good QB coach and has been known for putting Qbs in the NFL. I'm just worried that reputation might be hampered by the new system. Plus, Vince Young-eqsque QBs don't come by often. And Michigan has been attractive to top receiver prospects because of the way they play. I'm not sure how attractive Rich Rod's run spread will be to prospective star receivers.
