Oh yeah, and that we have a might have a chance to unload Moochie and MoT's contracts if we leave them unprotected. One can only hope right?
They must keep him in order to meet the league's minimum salary requirements. This team is smart. They had people they were targeting but did not get. Now, instead of spending it just for the sake of spending it, so they took draft picks and salary for one year, and are going to wait until they find the right mix of free agent talent. I like their thinking, and I feel they will not be down long.
They do not have to keep him to meet the league's minimum. If they waive him he's still on their payroll, which automatically make them make the league minimum. But cutting him is just plain stupid. They can actually use it as tradebait to get better players. Contracts like Rice's only have value in the last year. As for Utah, picks might get them something, but what FA in their right mind would? If they can't sign anybody this year, what makes you think they will sign somebody significant in next year's weaker pool of talent?
Check to make sure b/c I thought I heard your roster must be filled with a certain amount of money. Which is exactly why I hated this deal. I think the Rockets should have used him for trade bait along with Mobley and/or Griffin to get some one of significance. As it stands with Francis' deal kicking in, the Rockets have no room to sign anyone in the next off-season. Add to that, we are also getting rid of the opportunity to find a player in the draft as well. Management must think this team will taking them to the top. TYPICALLY I DO NOT INTEND TO MAKE PEOPLE LOOK LIKE IDIOTS, AND THIS TIME IS NO DIFFERENT. INSTEAD, YOU WILL MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT.... Man, you are short on facts here buddy. Who would have thought a black man would spend 18 years in Salt Lake City... and like it? Bottom line, money talks. If they have the most to offer they will at least be looked at, and part of the reason they did not make singings in this season was not from a lack of interest, they had agreements with restricted players whose team's exercised their right to match. Corey Maggette and Jason Terry BOTH signed with the Jazz. Damn, I wonder "what FA in their right mind would" want to do that????
If they cut Rice they'd still be paying for him to sit at home, which makes the minimum payroll. If the cap continues to drop next year we won't be able to sign anybody any ways despite of Rice's expiring contract. That's why you go for trade exceptions in the first place. So you can trade with ease while being over the cap. If you're so worried about the picks then alright, as I said 3 times already, Houston can simply broker a three way trade between two over the cap teams and get two 1st rounders for the favor, possibly earlier. I fail to see how we lost anything. Especially considering we'll be giving Utah two second rounders with Chicago's pick (cuz I doubt they can finish in the top 9) then one mid 1st round from us. OK so name the unrestricted FA's next year you would spend big bucks for? If they choose to spend money on Maggette and Terry then go ahead. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
Sorry for the incomplete post. I forgot to mention this off-season also has included another signing in Raja Bell.
I really wish you would not have continued this, b/c I am now forced to respond. The player they get does not have to be a FA. Do you know why? (I will stop there and let you figure this out on your own) Ok, never mind... They can trade. Actually they have a lot of flexibility. A team over the cap and looking to clear space. Between 3 players they have $23 million in expiring contracts. Every year there are teams who move talent at every trade deadline. They do not have to spend this money, they can do as they are and simply save the $40 million dollars they have available and see what the next market brings, butwhen they will have enough money to fill out a roster and sign 2 max dollars players. I am certain they won't have as much difficulty finding player willing to take max dollars as players have finding teams that HAVE max dollars, thus their chances of finding people should not be much of an issue.
Bottom line, money talks. If they have the most to offer they will at least be looked at, and part of the reason they did not make singings in this season was not from a lack of interest, they had agreements with restricted players whose team's exercised their right to match. People said the same thing about the Bulls, and they couldn't sign anyobdy. [/b]Corey Maggette and Jason Terry BOTH signed with the Jazz. Damn, I wonder "what FA in their right mind would" want to do that???? [/b] And both happened to be trying to avoid perennially crappy teams. Heck, who wouldn't rather be on the Jazz then the Clippers, even a Jazz team minus Malone and Stockton? And yes Malone played for Utah for 18 years, but he is also from Louisiana. Terry signed with the Jazz because of Hawks management. But now they have a better ownership. It's not like free agents like that are going to fall into the Jazz laps. This team is smart. They had people they were targeting but did not get. Now, instead of spending it just for the sake of spending it, so they took draft picks and salary for one year, and are going to wait until they find the right mix of free agent talent. I like their thinking, and I feel they will not be down long. They couldn't spen it for the sake of spending it THERE WAS NO ONE TO SPEND IT ON! They are going to be down for awhile. If they couldn't find that many quality FAs when Malone and Stockton were there, why now? The Jazz are clearing space and throwing their name in a hat and hoping to rebuild completely, just like the Clippers, and Bulls and Nuggets. And it didn't help any of those franchise.
OK let's talk about who they can trade. Well let's see, they can trade for Shaq Kobe TMac TD and just about anybody in the league. Which of those players are they gonna get? So theoretically they can trade cap fodder for Kobe (hey it's possible). Tell me why would the Lakers in their right mind do that? Even if Kobe actually demanded a trade it wouldn't be to the Jazz. That rules out tier 1 superstars who can actually carry their team. Tier 2: VC SF Ray Allan AI and group Would you trade them for a pick? Of course you would, who else would? Philly is not gonna win anything but at least they're in the playoffs, so they would trade AI to the Jazz because...? Tier 3: Shareef, Sheed, Grant, Eddie Jones These players are actually attainable to Utah because they play on crappy teams that desperately needs to rebuild. But if they can't help the Hawks, Heat etc win with their much more talented team compared to Utah what would make them win with the Jazz? Utah would only screw up their cap space. The only way they can possibly get anything is through FA because they can offer whoever obscene amount of money, which if they want to piss away on the likes of Terry and Maggette they can go right ahead. Btw, for that black man that stayed 18 years in Utah, he sadly never won anything. There's also a black man in Minnie that has the biggest contract in the league that can't bring them to the promised lands either. If they want to become the next Wolves, I'll start celebrating right now. SO WHO'S THE IDIOT, YOU TELL ME, MORON.
You. so much so that it is not worth me responding to what you have to say b/c you just won't get it.
This coming from a guy that thinks Maggette and Terry are good enough to carry a team. As much as I would love to have both of them on my team, if they are Houston's best players, the Rox would have no fans left. OK, put together a list of trades that would land something for Utah or shut the hell up.
If I were Rice, I would try to sign on with the Lakers for the min, sit back get a ring and retire. half their team has this plan
http://www.sltrib.com/2003/Oct/10022003/sports/97942.asp Jazz Notes: Rice's future unlikely to include Utah By Phil Miller The Salt Lake Tribune For the moment, Glen Rice's future depends upon John Amaechi's health. Amaechi reported to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday to take a physical exam, one day after being dealt by the Jazz for a handful of draft picks -- plus Rice, a 14-year veteran whose big contract made him expendable. Once Amaechi is cleared, the trade will become official at 5 p.m. MDT today. Rice's Jazz career is expected to end soon after. The Jazz have three options for dealing with their 36-year-old pickup: * Trade him again. If another team is interested in the three-time all-star, especially if that team has a contract it would like to shed the way Houston wanted to rid itself of Rice's $7 million-plus salary (and $9.6 million salary-cap hit), the Jazz would certainly listen -- particularly if more draft picks were thrown in. * Buy him out. It's not likely the Jazz would pay Rice's entire salary, but if the veteran guard wants to become a free agent and find a new home, the two sides could negotiate a middle-ground settlement that makes it possible. * Bring him to camp. That's the least likely possibility, because in their current rebuilding mode, it makes no sense for the Jazz to squander minutes on a short-term mercenary. The Jazz strongly signaled that they have no intention of putting Rice in uniform by waiving their right to a physical exam. For a player whose career has included serious elbow and knee injuries, such an exam would be critical to completing a trade -- if his new team intended to play him. Jazz vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor spoke to Rice's agent on Wednesday but would not comment on which option the team will follow. "We're being a little bit cautious about making any moves, [because] we've got to make sure the trade clears," O'Connor said. "We should have a much clearer picture on Friday morning."
