Found this thread from 2003: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=68793&page=1&pp=20 We have the luxury of observing Yao 7 years later. Personally, I don't think his BBall IQ is that bad, with respect to his playoff performance against Portland & Lakers last season. Specifically, it's hard to imagine a player (especially a center) with bad BBall IQ pulling these two assists with the game on the line: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PZ4KLsY84AE&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PZ4KLsY84AE&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> So, what's your verdict 7 years later?

I think Yao's Basketball IQ is relatively high. His strength is also his weakness. His massive size makes him, well bigger than his opponents, but it also makes him slower, more injury prone, more turnover prone, etc. It's a give and take with him. His upside is much higher than his downside though.
Given that big centers usually are deemed to have acceptable IQ when they can walk and chew gum at the same time, Yao Ming has good "BBall IQ" relative to other centers in this league. He is, however, slow to move his feet or react to double teams sometimes (understandable given his size and general lack of elite atheleticism) and doesn't exactly have the Tracy McGrady-like court vision.
racist. Seriously, off court IQ or classroom IQ is very different from basketball IQ. No one knows if Einstein would be able to make an entry pass without turning over the ball.
Sure we do! He would use his fancy quantem physics, create a wormhole, dump the ball into the wormhole, and it would pop out in front of Yao many years later in the finals for him to dunk it for the series winning bucket!
damn i miss Yao....that move he made at number one....that deserve to be no. 1. hope he will be back injury free next year.
