I don't understand the mentality of fans that so quickly dismiss our chances to do something great THIS season. Half a season to go and we're a game and a half out of the 8th playoff spot. It's all about the playoffs, guys. If we go in with momentum (and I think we will), anything can happen. Who would've picked the Giants to be playing in the Super Bowl? Now with the way they've been playing, it's a coin flip on who wins (IMO). Who would have picked the Miami Heat to win it all 2 years ago? That was a very flawed team - they were old and slow even back then. Closer to home: how about the 81 Rockets or the 95 Rockets? That's the nature of sports. That's why the games are played.

That being said, my glass is half full for good reason. The D is still solid: 5th best in PPG, 2nd best in FG%. The offense is trending upward and is LOOKING better. The rotation is set. The schedule is more favorable. Yao has his groove back on. TMAC is back (and hopefully stays that way). The young guys - Scola, Landry and Brooks - will only get better. I just get this feeling that we're in for a special treat this year.

As for rebuilding - we always need to rebuild. But it's not always necessary to tear down before you rebuild, which I think is the situation in our case.

    Not around for the run????

DD- be patient with me, I'm an old fella.

I think I posted about winning a NBA CHAMPIONSHIP! I don't bet, but I wouldn't on the Rockets doing it this season.

DD- If I remember right we might have been the 6th seed, but we were the defending champions also and we had traded for Clyde Drexler and hit the playoffs on all cylinders. (birth of Clutch City!)

I don't remember us winning the championship last season. I think Clyde is past his prime and THE NUMBER ONE DIFFERENCE in that team and this team is a player named DREAM.

I cheer for them to win every game, I want to win it all this season.

    I even believe in miracles.

But I do not tempt God. :D

I dont get it. We have at least enough talent to make the playoffs. So wouldnt you rather make the playoffs and find out if we have what it takes at the very least, or just give up and play the rookies more? I'd rather take the first route

Wait, the title of this thread is "Revisit my Rebuilding Plan" - yet there is no rebuilding plan in this entire post - just some half-assed reasons as to why we should rebuild. I'm not quite to rebuild mode myself, but I'm close enough not to scoff at anyone who suggests it. Nonetheless, I'd like to know where is the damned plan?

You could probably come up with 300 better reasons to rebuild than this rhester guy used but the irony in all of this is it seems his main point is that we're not going to win the championship this year, time to mail it in and rebuild. Meanwhile, there are four teams currently in the playoffs (Portland, Denver, GS, LA) with no real prayer of matching up with San Antonio, Dallas and Phoenix in a playoff series and consequently aren't going to win a championship this year either. I guess it's time for them to mail it in too, right?

Seven freaking games separate us from the #1 seed in the West and there's half of the season left to play. If you honestly, truly think it would be a wise decision to mail it in and give up given our position then I challenge you to explain to me why. And by that I mean actually develop a "rebuilding plan" with some legs under it. Don't sit here and type some crap like "blah blah blah....we need to rebuild around Yao....we aren't going to win this year....blah blah blah". You need to actually have a rebuilding strategy if you're going to start a thread like this.

Fully agree, I was asking myself the same question. The whole title/thread thing does not compute. At this point, we have every reason to dream of a championship THIS YEAR. BELIEVE!!!

Then you have to ask yourselves, can we currently defeat the Celtics or the Phoenix Suns in a 7 game series.

    1. No doubt about that. This will be a disappointed season.

    2. TMac's knee is really not a big concern. His salary does have a big load for the team for improving since he couldn't get us past the first round.

Rebuild now? I don't see that is happening. Les and Morey won't let that happen. They need to prove their concept that T-Mac and Yao can bring a title although we haven't passed the first round of playoffs yet in the last 3 years.

    1. Biggest determination is either get TMac healthy or hope for a way to unload him, but I wouldn't have him out there limping on one leg for the rest of this season.
    2. Start Brooks, plus Scola or Landry with the other one coming off the bench.
    3. Look for trades for Bonzi, Deke, Head, Rafer, James and Snyder- and I am on the fence on Hayes and Batttier. If you think Battier is a good glue guy (which I do) and Hayes is a good defender???? then you think about keeping them untouchable unless they are part of a trade that improves the process.
    4. Most importantly don't play TMac unless he is 100% healthy.

    That would be my plan.

I feel bad about our chances because I am a true fan.

I wasn't boasting about the Texans going to the super bowl either.

True fans watch the games, cheer the team and are honest. They also hurt the most when the team isn't winning. Let me hurt a little please.

I've sat through the worst Houston Oiler teams, the worst Rocket teams, the worst Astro teams and the first beautiful 6 years of the Texans, pulling for my home teams.

    True fans do that.

I just see some handwriting on the wall and I don't see anyone that looks like Hakeem Olajuwon on this roster.

I say that there is no reason to believe that, come playoff time, we won't be able to do just that.

Didn't we beat Phoenix IN Phoenix this year and almost beat the Celts without Tmac?

Oh man, this team is just warming up.

I started a pretty unpopular thread end of 2007 that the team would have no choice but to eventually rebuild because the change in system was going to take time including getting Adelman players who fit his style. I said that it looks to me like we will not win a championship in the TMac/Yao era because it was going to take a year or two to retool.

If Tmac is still here and 100% healthy and we have a very good offseason, maybe we can contend next year.

But this season I just don't believe we are contenders.

I thought we were at the end of last season. But not now. Sorry.

DD- No one is more ready to eat crow and swallow pride than me, I would love to be the fool and watch us crush the league and have CLUTCH CITY II this season (you know win it all!)

But I'm just not feeling any lighting in the bottle right now. OK? ;)

    Rhester,

You know I have great respect for you and you are singing from the same song sheet I was singing from last year, and it is why I wanted V-Span to be developed.

But this year is different, it is purely a chemistry issue, find the right mix, and I honestly believe the team will take off.

As for tempting God, don't worry, he is a Rockets fan.

If we believe truley that we can defeat the Suns and the Celtics in a 7 game series then by all means, carry on. Nobody should write the season off.

Of course we can, this team is just starting to get it....by the all star break they should be hitting their stride, and a Portland like win streak in our sites.

No way you give up on this year....too many weapons...it is all about people finding where they belong and what is expected of them ..from the coaches on down to the players.

Gonna be a fun 2nd half.

rhester made a great comparison to the spurs model utilizing oberto and bowen from to start and the scoring punch off the bench and it's similarity to our situation. hayes is so valuable on defense that we HAVE to have him against certain teams. i would argue that battier is more offensively than bowen (and less defensively) though. problem is, we don't exactly have michael finley or brent barry shooter types from our second unit, but we do have solid scorers in bonzi, luther, james (he is still around right?). the obvious difference to me is that they have a true facilitator and assassin in tony p, and rafer has been inconsistent. also, the spurs have had their roster PRETTY much set for a handful of seasons now, and i think their understanding and confidence in the system is reflected by the fluidity of their offense. they are all behind pop 100%.

I thought Novak was supposed to be a shooter right?
