Why is it that conservatives always point to the Constitution over gun control but get their panties in a wad over free expression. Why do you wear your lapel flag if one of the principles you'd die for isn't free speech. Sure he appears insane, like Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Firing Line or the WWF. Everyone knows it takes sensationalism to get noticed in America. No soft spoken, reserved opinions are ever going to get any air time. The former marine sees his 15 minutes have arrived and he is going to exploit it to the hilt. I'm pissed he is costing Obama some support and it seems the exact wrong way to be influincng public opinion right now, but he can say what he wants and Obama has to live with his choices.
I don't think any conservative is saying that Wright should be arrested for his opinions. I don't think anyone is saying anyone who agrees with him should be arrested. I think the cry you are hearing (whether it's ridiculous or not isn't the point) is that they don't want someone who might believe that way as their president. The Constitution doesn't protect you from people not wanting you to govern if they think you are crazy and hate your country.
Biggest mistake Obama made in his political career is to associate himself with Wright. Rev Wright is not Obama's friend.
Someone was saying yesterday on Olberman's show that Wright may be a little jealous since he is the one who built that church over the years.
I definitely think he's trying to steal publicity, but he isn't even pastor at the church anymore. He's retired. I actually think he might be doing it for book deals or something like that. Maybe I'm just being cynical. The guy is hogging as much limelight as he can.
Well, he was associated with Obama long before there even was a political career. Did you see the question where they tried to embarrass Wright by asking him why he wasn't invited to the event announcing Obama's presidential candidacy? Wright's answer: that was a political event not a spiritual event. He further went on to disclose that he was there just not visible. He was "downstairs" praying with Obama and his family prior to the announcement "upstairs." The guy doesn't seem to crave the limelight-- unlike Jackson, Sharpton or the late Reverend Falwell.
You seem pretty well reasoned in this thread, giddy. I'm impressed. I think you are cutting Wright even more slack than I am. I was thinking he might see himself as the new Sharpton or something. I guess I could see where maybe all of a sudden he has more opportunities to speak than before, and he's just using those opportunities, but I don't really know. I actually don't really care that much either. It just doesn't seem that important.
I love how I'm a lunatic... except when I'm agreeing with you and mc mark... Peaches grow on Trees not Bushes so I'm not ready to impeach Bush.
Understood, but both Obama and Wright have said that Barack doesn't look for political advice from the rev. Also we could just hope that McCain doesn't get political advice from Hagee, or any of the other spiritual folks he's been courting support from.
Yeah, I was shocked that you were so hard on him. I'm full of surprises if you just give it a chance. I'm not here to keep score but to promote discussion. That is not directed at you specifically, FB. It's just a revelation that I have to make repeatedly so people don't get their panties in a wad when I say something they don't expect. Did you see them ask Wright why he had waited so long to respond to the criticisms from the YouTube videos? He jokingly cited his mother's wisdom that it was better to remain quiet and let people assume he was an idiot than to speak up defensively and remove all doubt. Then he went on to a more serious Proverbial explanation that it was better to offer a quiet measured response which included the challenge to read the whole sermon rather than just watch the soundbites. I haven't done that; does anybody have a link to the sermon itself?
I have read one of the sermons in the spotlight, and a couple of other sermons of his, and I've said many times that it wasn't as if this kind of talk was the normal thing every Sunday, but people see 10 minutes, and want to believe that it was a steady stream of that stuff for 20 years rather than something kind of rare, and out of context. That being said some of what he said was crazy. Some was offensive. A lot of it was on target. Either way Wright isn't running for office.
You got it. Don't you remember the post in which Bigtexx said he was too valuable to doing his business job to go serve in Iraq? It reminds me of Romney's kids who were too valuable working on his campaign to go to Iraq.
Wright is loving it. He is having his 15 minutes of fame. I agree with the book deal. He might be pissed at Obama. He might be one of these guys who thinks there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats. He could care less about hurting Obama politically. He is no friend to Obama. Obama should drop out of the church asap. There is nothing to be gained by associating in any form whatsoever with Wright or his church.
Seeing Obamas' latest (comments/tone) response about Rev. Wright:...I seem inclined to agree with you here glynch, it seems to have become VERY personal. A no win situation...
I think you are right. The condescending way in which he responded to the lady's questions revealed a huge ego and manners which seemed very unbecoming a pastor.
