I complain about traffic, but don't start a petition. I am on call 24/7, but I don't complain about it. I accept it as part of the responsibility I undertook when I accepted my job. If folks want to complain about having to go to work at a certain time or certain day, more power to them. I just don't have sympathy for them (at least not in this example).
Obviously not everyone has off on the holidays, and people struggling to find work wouldn't complain. And I can understand that retailers make a bulk of their revenue during the holidays. But this is going a little far. Telling me we can't all take a break from our material-driven lives for one day? I never understood the point in opening at midnight, let alone 8pm on Thanksgiving. Venture to say one day stores won't even bother closing anymore.
I heard on the news that employees who have to work on Thanksgiving and the midnight shift will be paid time and a half so they are getting extra compensation.
I'm not picking on you but when these people make $10.88 versus $7.25 I have to think, big ****ing deal. It isn't like they are paying their car off with the extra $3.63 for 10 to 12 hours. I'm thinking that the retailers are making out on that deal.
The reality is . . . Holidays are no longer Holidays The consumerism is more important than anything. What is Thanksgiving about? What are holidays? Other than another reason to sell you stuff . .. they are useless I wonder how long before no one can buy on those days cause EVERYONE is at work Rocket RIver
well we really don't have anyone to blame other than ourselves. me and you both buy presents on christmas, chocolates at easter... personally i feel that working on a holiday is no big deal, they knew that is a possibility when they took the job. why complain now? just be glad that they have the money to pay bills. and for your question about which country works more? you have to be kidding right:grin:? mexico, japan and korea have the longest working hours in the world,.
And businesses, if they make employees work on holidays, should expect that people will be unhappy about it. That's totally predictable and expected.
I agree. No one should ever complain about their jobs, ever. When we had unsafe factory conditions, people knew that going in, so why complain about it? In fact, we should take that a step further. We should never complain about anything, because we should just be glad we are alive.
The serfs are complaining about working on Thanksgiving? How dare them! Cut their water rations in half. That will teach them a lesson.
Don't know, could care less, and probably we do. While I would love to pat you on your back because you said something positive about America, the fact is this nation is becoming a nation of entitled whinners, and these employees are a PRIME example of it.
Of course the retailers are making out on that deal but I don't think its a bad thing that they make money. My point was was that they aren't punishing the employees but that the employees are getting some benefit out of this. Personally for me I am neither for this or against it. I don't consider Thanksgiving sacrosanct but at the same time I think the frenzy around Black Friday another indication of how shallow and materialistic we are.
Where is the concern for the Amazon or Target.com or Bestbuy.com employees that have to work ON Thanksgiving or Christmas? These web sites are open 24/7 and someone has to be working. Granted, I suspect there are employees in different countries, but there are Americans working as well.
We really ought to tone down the consumerism and let people have a damned vacation or holiday every now and again. I think the world will survive if Walmart isn't open 24/7-365.
Most of these employees are commodities. They can complain all they want, the corporations will just find someone else who will do the job. My dad has been an upper-level manager at Target for 15 years -- he has to work some of the peculiar holiday shifts. He doesn't complain about it. I do hear him complain when his employees don't show. These people get no sympathy from me.
