That's been my prediction, and I still hope I'm wrong. My hope is to get someone like Olympia Snowe to cross the aisle and break the tie, like Jeffords did a few years back. If nothing else, I think Democrats can block Bush's judicial appointments for the rest of his term... if they want to. Keep D&D Civil.
Sorry I meant in the Senate. There aren't any Senate races going on in my state Arkansas but I have been watching the Ford Jr.-Corker battle in my neighbor Tennessee and it looks like Corker was leading with Shelby county still coming a while ago. What's it looking like now?
TN looks like a goner... Ford down by +50k with 2-3% left. Long recount of VA ahead... with the absentee ballots, I think Webb eeks it out. McCaskill closing a bit... 50-47% with 69% reporting. Tester keeping his lead with 30% reporting.
CNN now shows McCaskill with a slight lead! 48%-48%! edit: now it's changed again. Gonna be a long night! Keep D&D Civil.
Well insofar as the Democrats have gained a majority in the House, I congratulate the lefties on the board. Hopefully things work out for the best and I am wrong about what a Democratic House will mean for the country. In a democracy, you win some and you lose some. You guys won fairly substantially today. I still can't seem to come to terms with Nancy Pelosi being Speaker of the House but I will indeed have to. The senate will be around 50-50 which is the best possible situation right now, in my mind, as both parties need to depolarize and begin to work together. Again, congrats to those of you who wished for a Democratic majority in at least one of the houses of Congress. Though it's not what I wanted, it's obviously what the people wanted and it seems to have been achieved in a fair manner. That's all you can ask for.
Did anybody hear the questionable call of Chris Matthews? "And this clapping, it's not appealing, it's CHINESE or something" wow, inappropriate, I don't know how he came up with that. China Defenders, you have a right to be upset about that, as well as everybody else, just a dumb, weird thing to say.
It should not be that hard, after all with a Republican president, how much power would a democratic house (and/or senate) control? V. little, IMO. That's why things like what Bush has/was been saying ("...if so and so, raise taxes" etc) is/are ridiculous. Like what, he's going to drop his VETO pen in the toilet? Don't think so.
as the early results began to pour in i was filled with denial, thinking the exit polls had to be off. it quickly turned to anger as the concessions speaches poured in, and then i seeming skipped bargaining and depression, and now accept what has happened. as i said earlier, it is not a complete shock, and i am encouraged that with a split or close majority in both houses they will be forced to work together. maybe now, after 6 years, the real compassionate conservative from texas that we elected in 2000 will come out. i'm still not pleased with the gov. results, but maybe 4 more years will open more peoples eyes. otherwise, find that goat farm kinky is moving to and save a bed for me.
KC has yet to come in... that should put her over the top. I do think the Dems might have taken the Senate tonight. (Great sigh of relief.) I have to tell you... it feels good to have late-breaking races go Dem after the last 3 elections.
1. Kansas City and St. Louis will carry McCaskill to victory in Mizzou. 2. If Allen had not made the "macaca" comment, he would've won VA. 3. Conrad Burns going down in Montana 4. Corker takes Tenn after the midday phone calls by the RNC
Bush has a veto pen? Even so, there's another reason this House won't accomplish much. The public newly elected a bunch of blue dogs. The new Democrats are almost all either conservative or moderate. They all ran on promises to keep taxes low, control spending, balance the budget, not socialize medicine, etc. They often have really close views to their Republican opponents, but are unsullied with scandal or the President.
