James Best was most famous for his role of Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane on TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard."
James Best, best known for his role as bumbling Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on "The Dukes of Hazzard," died Monday night. He was 88.

The actor passed away at a hospice facility following a brief illness and complications from pneumonia, a close friend told the Charlotte Observer.

Aside from roles on other TV shows like "Gunsmoke," "Mod Squad" and "Bonanza," Best also formed an acting school in the '70s.

The school taught Hollywood greats like Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Lindsay Wagner, Farrah Fawcett and Quentin Tarantino.

Loved this show and his character. Anybody remember his appearance as a cool rock and roll star that fell on hard times on Andy Griffith? That episode always cracks me up when I think of him as Rosco P. Coltrane.

He was probably the best actor on the show, which, like all of you, I ****ing loved to death as a child. It was way more fun watching Roscoe lose over and over again than it ever should have been.

The genius of James Best's Roscoe was how he made him the lovable heel. Even the Duke boys kind of liked him and sympathized with his mishaps.

I would write his signature nonverbal expression of glee, but I don't know how to possibly spell it. Quew-quew! (???)
