Every time you want to smoke, put the money in your piggy bank! See how much you get at the end of the month.
Best of luck with the quitting, RocketRaccoon. Giving up smoking was one of the hardest things I ever did. I went through so many attempts, but I don't think my heart was ever really in it. I managed to smoke with a patch on (thought I was having a heart attack), quit for a week, cut down to a few day, but I could never completely kick the habit. A friend of mine got cancer, and I really decided to quit, which finally enabled me to go cold turkey. It sucked immensely, and my fiance was a champ for putting up with my moodiness. But I haven't been a smoker in almost 8 years (I used to smoke 1.5 packs a day). As others have said, it does get easier after the initial effort. Even then, for years, I'd crave one in a bar or after certain events (stressed, etc.). Today, the thought kind of makes me nauseous. To this day, I still chew on pens all the time, and all of them on my desk have gnarled ends. Hang in there!
I think you're pulling my leg so I'll just stick to the question for the benefit of others who's thinking about quitting. Coffee in the morning: Part of this long path I've been on was forcing myself to smoke outside. Very hard to do when you work from home. But it separates the coffee drinking from the cigarette smoking. Long drives: Again, like the home, I don't smoke inside the car. Hell, it was really easy to do since I don't smoke on my bike . BTW, my pants are fitting sooooo much better!!!! Yeah, only a skinny guy can say that and be happy about it!
Thanks. Lets see how I do with week 3... I really thought if I can get past the first 3 days it would be all downhill. NOT. It seems to have gotten worse, but everybody says it'll get better. And that's what I'm going to repeat to myself everytime time I want a cig, " clutchfans said..." Again, thank you everybody for your support.
I dunno why people find it weird I want to start smoking. Millions of people smoke in the US anyways caffeine just does not cut it for me and this gum is OK for pep but totally sucks for taste, and burns my throat.
Well blow me down. Allow me to be the first to call you a complete (I want to be nice but I feel you really need to know how smokers feel about you wanting to start) idiot, baka, dumb person, ignoramous, etc. Just thought you should know. Wait, you can't be this slow. You're pulling my leg. Gosh darn, you got me. -
the weird part is proclaiming it to the world (or BBS) and asking questions about how to go about it. you're right, of course, millions of people smoke, so at one point in their lives, millions of people said to themselves, I want to smoke, what do I do? My guess is, though, that most people kind of thought that subconsciously and one day just started smoking. that is to say, most people who are logical enough to research the habit before starting probably aren't likely to start in the first place. i can't remember when i first thought to myself "I want to smoke" and first did it. I had had cigarettes by 15 and was fully hooked by 16. Four years or so later, I quit cold turkey because I realized it was stupid. it's been +/- 10 years since then. I know everybody is different, but I found cold turkey to be the way to go. It's tough, but gives you that clean break.
How old are you? Most people after a certain age don't decide to "just start" smoking. I had my first cigarette when I was 15 and got addicted. I'm almost 26 now and want to quit really bad. I always felt I had the power to just quit cold turkey one day during my earlier years of smoking. I'm not so sure if I have that kind of will-power anymore to be honest. This will be another hump to get over and I'll have to really discipline myself. Must quit smoking!
once you make the choice to stop, then its all down hill from there. Stopping because you think you should isnt enough, you have to really want to stop. You have you ups and downs. Find your triggers (coffee, drinking, etc) and stay away from those for a few weeks. Try tea instead of coffee, drink juice at night, etc. Plus, change your schedule. Keep yourself busy...work out more. it's been about 9 months for me and i still get the urge everynow and then...i even give in once in a while. It's amazing how much you realize how gross it is after you stopped (i.e. tasing, smelling). It's funny because after you quit, you become a superhero at spotting other smokers. I can smell them a mile away.
I quit about 2.5 years ago, its tough at first but well worth. I jsut know I can never take even a puff of a cig otherwise I might as well buy a carton. Its nice being free of it. Allen Carrs Easy way to quit is a great book for those planning on quiting. (read before quiting not after), it helps you rationalize it. Good luck, it gets easier.
I smoked for about 15 years. It took me over a year of quitting, starting up again, quitting again and so on before finally losing the habit for good. What really helped were my friends, especially, ironically, those who smoked. Once they realized I was serious about quitting, they refused to give me a cigarette whenever I faltered. Anyway, good luck to you.
Are you for real? Coming into a thread in which a clutchfan is looking to stop his addiction to a silent-killer of a habit, and asking for advice on how to start? If you aren't here to encourage, then start your own damn thread for your question. Good luck RocketRaccoon!

Try not to think about it as much as possible. Easier said then done of course. I got a friend that just recently quit too. Just think about something that will motivate you to not smoke.
Yeah, this is actually a big one. If you’re like me, you aren’t just addicted to the nicotine, you’re addicted to the action of smoking. It’s part of your routine. So the only way you can change that is to change your routine. I was lucky that my quitting 9 years ago came with a job change, so I had no choice but to change my routine. That made quitting a LOT easier. I wonder if I could have pulled it off if I had stayed at my same job for another year. Probably so, but it would have been a lot harder.
If you have a HTC G-1, there is a cool app, that gives you up to the minute stats about "quitting". Shows how much money, time, and health you aquire minute by minute for not smoking. I have been clean since 12/31/08 @ 8:45 PM. I made the change not only for myself but for my family. 14 years of smoking! GOODBYE!
I also quit on 12/31/08. I have smoked since 1985 with a 3 year break about 10 yrs ago. Started back after I got divorced from the devil. I am 34 and if you can add that up, I started at 11
If you want to quit smoking, don't go with gums, patches, and all that half-assed approach. Just do it. I quit more than 13 years ago after 10 years of smoking a pack a day, and never looked back.
Best way I have found to quit is cold turkey. Just deal with it. The key is to stop the smoking triggers in your day... ie the first cig in the morning, cig with coffee, cig after meal, with a drink, etc. If you can get by those activities without lighting one up, you're already way ahead of the game
