the thing is the GOOD music which tickles your brain and has real depth to it is always GOOD music.

doesn't matter where in time it was made.

Understood and that is a valid point. The only reason I brought this up was because the article stated that all music sounds the same these days which just isn't the case. Aside from the clear advancements in classical and jazz music, other more "popular" genres have artists who are doing things differently.

It is undeniable that Radiohead is progressing rock as an artform. Another good example would be Deerhoof for their clear originality and post modern aesthetic. Even Tool, (which I don't really care for much) has done some very revolutionary things for rock. Captain Beefheart just recently passed away. Is anyone going to debate the merits of his originality? Even in the "popular electronic" music category (which I can't stand most of) Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin or Squarepusher have done some amazing things.

My point is, people thought everything had been done before, and then Bob Dylan came. After Bob Dillan everything had been done before, and now we have Tom Waits. The fact of the matter is, there will always be something new and original. It is up to us to find it, not only in sophisticated genres, but in popular ones as well. This article is clearly looking in the wrong places.

Well it's pretty obvious. It's not that easy to create something new if you grew up listening to so many things and some wouldn't even know if it sounds like another songs or tunes they have heard before. The way if we will ever hear something new would be by luck or by some new musically savant or maybe from a deaf person who can read musical notes but never given a full bar of musical notes.

Part of it is simply we (as a very overgeneralized society/population/whatever) like what we like.

I remember being in a recording studio several years ago and the sound engineer wasn't even listening to the music. He was just watching the soundwaves move on the computer screen as the songs played. And he easily pinpointed the "hit."

He was like, "This is the one you want. It just has that pattern that hit songs follow." He expanded on it a little bit, but yada yada yada, he was absolutely right.

Why don't bands/artists record live albums anymore?

Also, I think a lot of the blandness of today's pop music has to do with the lack of drugs. And great bands sobering up only to make bland music (RHCP, Aerosmith, etc.)

We need more drugs (particularly LSD) in the music business so we can see performances like this again:
