I had a w520 before my macbook pro. I wish I still had it because it superior to my macbook in every way other than the douche bag factor and the 170 watt power supply that was heavier than an IPAD.
None of the laptops I looked at had everything I needed. So, I have settled on a two laptop and one desktop solution. -Ordered a Lenovo x230 Thinkpad for Windows/Linux, for programming on the go. -Ordered a Macbook pro Retina for Photo/Video editing. I think Nikon D800E with its 36 Mpx resolution deserves a Retina display. YOLO! NOTE to those who are considering macbook pro Retina. I found out that both Samsung and LG manufacture screens for Retinas. Most come with LG ones which have retention/ghosting issues. The Samsung ones dont have this issue. You cannot figure out which screen you are getting without opening the box and plugging in your mac. You have to run a command prompt. To make things worse, Apple is saying that this issue is "within specs". A lot of people are not aware of this issue (the problem can show up anytime, a few months after use). And those who are aware are not getting a lot of help from Apple. Shame on Apple! Looks like I will be playing the screen lottery until I end up with the Samsung display.
