And what is wrong with Mexicans?

I'm coming back late to this thread and haven't had a chance to read through it for the last two days but this post sounds like your problem is with Mexicans in particular rather than immigration in general.

In regard to the topic of Mexicans and illegal immigration, since this thread seems to have morphed to that since I last was here. I was just in San Diego for the last few days and decided to head down to the border at San Ysidro. I took the LRT down and on the train almost all of the people were speaking Spanish. At San Ysidro saw more signs and heard more people speaking Spanish than English. I have no idea how many people on the train or going about San Ysidro were here legally or not but I presume that a fair proportion of them are not here legally. I suspect that what I saw is what many of those who are frightened by this issue are concerned about.

I though didn't see some sort of ethnic hell hole. What I saw was a lot of people coming and going from jobs working hard, raising their families and looking after their community. Sure I didn't understand most of what was said but I didn't see something to be feared. I saw people living the values that we as Americans claim to uphold, hard work, love of family and community.

Instead of fearing these people we should be looking to them to revitalize this country.

No! Business regulation is evil! Can you imagine how expensive the oversight of all business' hiring practices would be? I want to stop immigration but don't you dare raise my taxes. But I also don't want the government to employ deficit spending, so...

"The 14th Amendment is a great legacy of the Republican party. It is a shame and an embarrassment that the GOP now wants to amend it for starkly political reasons," "Initially Republicans rallied around the amendment to welcome more citizens to this country. Now it is being used to drive people away."

They account for 57% of the people who are violating immigration law. That seems pretty relevant to the discussion. I don't have a problem with immigration in general just illegal immigration in particular.

Could you tell how many of them were committing identify theft or accepting cash wages to avoid the government? Or how many had free c-sections at the county hospital? How many were undercutting the wages of Americans? How many were MS13 gang members or drug mules or coyotes? I think most of us find that a lot more troublesome than the Spanish they speak.

I'll let you in on a big secret because I must have heard a thousand times by now that it's a racial thing why people are more concerned with our southern border than our northern border. It's because for every Canadian illegal in the US there are 100 Mexican illegals. It's also because Canada is a pretty stable government while Mexico has one of the most corrupt governments on Earth.

    more on the 14th --

    Republicans Passed the 14th Amendment

The 14th Amendment guarantees due process and equal protection of the laws to all citizens. It enshrines in the Constitution provisions of the GOP’s 1866 Civil Rights Act. The original purpose of the 14th Amendment was to defend African-Americans from their Democrat oppressors in the post-Civil War South.

The principal author of the 14th Amendment was U.S. Rep. John Bingham (R-OH). In Congress, all votes in favor of the 14th Amendment were from Republicans, and all votes against it were from Democrats.

In 1868, the Republican Governor of New Jersey vetoed an attempt by the Democrat-controlled legislature to rescind the state's ratification of the 14th Amendment.

Just a quick question. Judging from what little I've read from you, it seems that in your eyes the solution rests in "enforcing the rules on the book."

But do you actually think our current immigration rules are fine as they are constituted?

And not to accuse of this specifically but I find a lot of people who say stuff like "enforce the rules" as a solution dont even know what the rules are or how are our immigration system is even structured.

I agree and disagree with it because it's too broad a stroke on the issue. There are certainly politicians who'll support this change in order to rally some segment of society that wants to maintain some "American" way of life they feel is being destroyed by immigrants. It's also possible that you believe like I do that this law is a huge incentive for people to violate immigration law and that by changing the law you eliminate that incentive. Sometimes Republicans are right for the wrong reasons and if you believe their motive is purely racial, which half of it probably is I don't doubt, then this is one of those times.

I don't think you have to be an immigration lawyer to understand we have an illegal immigration problem. I don't doubt that some of the current rules and wait times and costs, like the birth law and the open borders, provide an incentive for illegal immigration. It's a complicated issue and I don't pretend otherwise.

But that's my problem then. You say things like we have to enforce the rules without making a determination whether the rules make any sense. And I'm not even talking about wait times or costs. I'm talking about the lottery, the quota system, the types of visas we have and the way we hand them out. (not to mention the silliness of visa interviews and how they handle them in different countries)

So we have illegal immigration but you dont make any conclusions as to why we have this problem. And if we cant come to an agreement as to why a problem exists how in the world do you expect to craft a solution that does anything?

You don't realize this, but you are revealing your bias.

You assume that since 57% of illegal immigrants are Mexicans, that the majority of illegals come through running through the border while avoiding inspection.

Regardless of whether that is true or not, you've already presumed that without evidence. And that's what really bugs me.

I advocate a tight border and sending illegals back to their home country primariy by going after employers who violate U.S. policy.

But I also think if someone has managed to survive here for 10 years as an illegal, they should get citizenship. People say, well that's not fair.

I say, I'd rather have the guy so desperate to get into America that he'd leave everything behind -his home, family, and loved ones, and a chance of the American dream and stuck it out that long....they are probably more worthy of citizenship than 99% of us.

Fair? whatever. Fair is just another word used by conservatives to deny people who don't match their beliefs or skin color.

i'm just calling out the spades in the deck. it might behoove you to rethink some of your viewpoints.

i've spent a lot of time and energy understanding right wing view points and it's clear as day that much of it's based on fears, lies, and racial bias.

So you think it is foolish to think that something illegal, run amok, might become problematic.

If it were Germany on our southern border and they had the same crappy government that the Mexicans do, you do realize that you would not be able to play the race card, don't you?

Or the French. Or the Dutch. Or the Swiss. Or the....

As the stats point out, most illegal immigrants cross the birder illegally. One of the main reasons this happens is that we don't have secure borders. So let's fix that first. That's the one solution that is most likely to have the greatest effect on illegal immigration. If you make it physically impossible to come across the border illegally then it's not going to happen regardless of the reasons why people do it. Second of all, since increased border protection is not likely to stop 100% of the attempts then we address the incentives people have to try. And that's where restructuring immigration rules, implementing fines for employers, and a change to the birth law comes into effect. You make it sound like I have to be as much an advocate for immigrants and their problems as I am for our citizens and our problems. I support immigration but let's not mistake a priveledge with a right and confuse our priorities as a nation.

Can you? I'm going with what I saw you are going with what sounds like a negative stereotype of Mexicans.

Does that mean that Mexicans as a whole or individually are then suspect? There are plenty of Canadian criminals and in regard to terrorism we have known cases of terrorists attempting to cross from the Canadian border.
