Payroll taxes are not taxes? Social Secuity is definitely a tax. It is a tax on current workers to pay out to current retirees (and whatever budget shortfalls Congress creates, because money is fungible). It has no actual guarantee to provide benefits to the people currently paying that it will provide a return in the future when and if they retire. In the event people paying in now do receive social security benefits, the return is so low that few if any would voluntarily invest in a fund that had the returns the SS does. Pretty much everyone paying social security taxes would be better off if the same money was instead automatically invested in a fund that matches the S&P 500. They have done studies on this for years and over 99% of people would be better off if their social security taxes were so invested than they are under social security. Only low-income people who live very long lives are better off under social security.

We already know MAGA and facts don't mix, I don't see anyone trying to convince you of anything because it's a waste of time. Old Donnie could declare himself dictator and you'd be cheering it on to own the libs.

Why are you weighing in on this?

This is a Capitalist vs Socialist debate not another Trump debate. But maybe your bad case of TDS wont let you realize this.

Believing in capitalism is a cult?

If so then yes, I believe in the cult that helped build this country into the greatest country in the world.

Anybody have thoughts on this provision in the house bill? Section 70302

SEC. 70302. RESTRICTION ON ENFORCEMENT. No court of the United States may enforce a contempt citation for failure to comply with an injunction or temporary restraining order if no security was given when the injunction or order was issued pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 65(c), whether issued prior to, on, or subsequent to the date of enactment of this section.

These two substack posts suggest that this provision would gut the ability for courts to enforce any injunctions, past and future, unless the plaintiff pays a bond first.

What's not clear to me is what is the bond for? Does the plaintiff have to pay the cost of running the court system while the case is ongoing? Cost of any expense incurred due to an injunction (e.g., salary of ICE agents while deportation is paused by an injunction?).

I don't like being an alarmist but I can't think of a any good reason to have this provision snuck into a 1,000 page budget bill.

This was news around a week ago, I believe there is also a provision that restricts states from creating AI laws for 10 years but I haven't had a chance to read that portion of the final bill yet.

SSA benefits are progressive, and also only factor in a maximum of 35 years. Your spouse can simultaneously draw 50% of your benefit. It is also disability insurance and life insurance (if you die or are old, your dependents and spouse receive benefits). SSA benefits can definitely work in your favor if you know how to minimize the low to no value dollars.

LOL - hello rt wing nut job alternative facts.

It is meant as a safety net, and it is a good one, the rich have been trying to get people to invest in the stock market with bullshit schemes like 401k instead of pensions for years.....which create a false floor in the markets and make the wealthy richer.

SS is a program that you pay into - and you get the benefit of in retirement it is forced savings for retirement - is it the best return? NO of course not, it is not meant to be it is a safety net.

And it is not a tax, you pay in, you get out - that is how it works, the only reason there is a shortfall is that congress forced the USPS to pay forward 50 years of SS up front - which cost billiions.

SS is here to stay, it is not an entitlement - it is YOUR money - it is MY MONEY - it is in leiu of pensions that corporations took away as the GOP weakened UNIONS which gave us 40 hour work weeks, paid time off, and stopped 10 year olds from working in the mines.

SS is a great program - now if you want to stop congress from STEALING from it and giving people the ability to invest a portion of it, I am 100% behind that.
