They do almost always. The problem is once abortion is banned with unclear medical exceptions, as they are now in Texas and many other States, the medical exception of 'at risk of death' means women need to suffer from acute conditions until it leads to an emergency (safe bet from a legal perspective) or severe enough complications (iffy, might get jail time).

the signs were all there…GOP ignored them to push a false “red wave” agenda and are now shocked and confused at the outcome of these midterms

I'm hoping we do see a real reset after this and Republicans start seeking a genuine compromise on what the abortion rules should be. While I'm generally pro-choice, I never really liked how Roe shut down any ability to debate and decide what reasonable policy should be (we also see this phenomenon with the second amendment now). So, who knows, maybe it'll eventually be worth striking Roe down if it means we can have a democratically determined set of abortion laws that really addresses the needs of society. If Republicans keep headed down the road of the fetus' right to life though, that position brooks no compromise.

Where does this discussion begin with the GOP? It'd have to be state level. And I don't see much incentive for GOP in places like Texas to entertain it right now.

I think places like Texas are going to have to suffer under draconian rules for a while before enough people are disillusioned with the real life impacts of the right to life approach. We're not going to fix it in a year or anything.
