Can you tell me what was so memorable about the speech? What did he say that he hasn't already said in previous speeches? The AP didn't think it was that great of a speech. Some Civil Rights leaders were actually annoyed that on the anniversary of MLK I have a dream speach, Obama didn't mention it ONCE during his Denver speech.
So what was so memorable about this speech that will go down in history? Other than the 80,000 people, the fireworks, the typical Dem one-liners. What did he say in his actual speech that people will say...I remember him saying that in Denver?

Just a couple that come to my mind:

    "John McCain....ENOUGH!"

"It's not that John McCain doesn't care about his country...He just doesn't get it!"

"We ALL care about this country...(something to the effect don't question our patriotism)"

"In ten years, we will have become independant of foreign oil!"

"Every person in the US will have great healthcare available to at least what is available to the members of Congress"

I could go on, but Im sure you wouldn't acknowledge it and that you don't really care. But don't forget, this was a "presidential nomination acceptance" speech; not a civil rights speech. The history nature of it being on that day was already covered by other speakers and Obama made acknowledgment of that, that was enough. He also made notice of what Hillary accomplished for women and their plight.

If you dont' think over 80,000 people being their and over 38 million viewers tuning in, more than the Olympics opening ceremony..then I dont know what to tell someone like you. I even see people online from other countries about talking about how historic it was. So you are out of touch my friend!

LOL at the mud slinging quotes from Obama. 80,000 Obama drone voters doesn't mean a lot to me

    Yes. It was historic indeed.

But, how many channels were covering the speech as compared to the Olympic opening ceremonies? Apples and oranges.

Had a pretty interesting day yesterday. I went to the MN State Fair in St. Paul during the day and you could already see things gearing up for the RNC with national and foreign press there. Jesse Ventura even showed up to help campaign for Dean Barkley, who is running under the MN Independence Party for Senate, although I think the RNC being there might have had something to do with it as I saw him getting interviewed by French TV. Al Franken was also working the fair and tried to talk to him but he also seemed to be tied up doing interviews for national tv. I talked to some people at the McCain booth whether he or Palin might make an appearence today or tomorrow. They didn't know but said it might be possible.

For the first part of the night I went to an event that was part of the UnConvention, http://theunconvention.com/. With a lot of people who are against the RNC. After that I went to a Minneapolis downtown bar that had a ton of young Republican operatives in for the Convention and a few locals. Quite an interesting contrast. Didn't see any problems or realy hostility between the two groups and it seems like most people are living up to Minnesota nice and the Republicans I met in general seemed impressed with the Twin Cities.

Looking forward to seeing all of the stuff going on with the Convention and plan to check out some more of the events going on this afternoon. There is massive protest planned tomorrow in St. Paul and another on Wednesday. I'm not sure if I will march in them but plan on checking them out and will post some pics.

Again...All stuff he has been saying throughout his campaign. The only difference he had a backdrop of 80,000 people and a Rockstar Fireworks display. People will remember the spectacle...but those words in his Denver speech aren't going to be in history books for our children to read.

I knew they would chicken out and almost cancel their whole convention because they can't match the Democratic convention.

It's so lame to use the hurricane as an excuse.

I hope that the hurricane dies to a tropical storm and goes through an unpopulated area causing no loss of life and property damage. That will be great for Americans!

    And terrible for republicans! :D

There are 305,023,486 million Americans today.
    http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en

So you are saying Obama is going to get 57% of the total population to vote for him? That's only if all 305+mil DO vote.

U.S. Voter Turnout Up in 2004, Census Bureau Reports

Sixty-four percent of U.S. citizens age 18 and over voted in the 2004 presidential election, up from 60 percent in 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. Tables from a November survey also show that of 197 million citizens, 72 percent (142 million) reported they were registered to vote. Among those registered, 89 percent (126 million) said they voted. In the 2000 election, 70 percent of citizens were registered; and among them, 86 percent voted.

Other highlights from the Voting and Registration in the Election of November 2004 online tables pertaining to the voting-age citizen population:

    * In 2004, turnout rates for citizens were 67 percent for non-Hispanic whites, 60 percent for blacks, 44 percent for Asians and 47 percent for Hispanics (of any race). These rates were higher than the previous presidential election by 5 percentage points for non-Hispanic whites and 3 points for blacks. By contrast, the voting rates for Asian and Hispanic citizens did not change. These data pertain to those who identified themselves as being of a single race. (See Table 1. [Excel])

    * Minnesota had the highest citizen-voting rate at 79 percent, and North Dakota the highest citizen-registration rate at 89 percent. (See Table 2. [Excel])

    * Citizens age 65 and older had the highest registration rate (79 percent) while those age 18 to 24 had the lowest (58 percent). The youngest group also had the lowest voting rate (47 percent), while those age 45 and older had the highest turnout (about 70 percent). (See Table 1. [Excel])

    * Among citizens, turnout was higher for women (65 percent) than for men (62 percent). The turnout rate for people with a bachelor’s degree or higher (80 percent) was greater than the rate for people whose highest level of educational attainment was a high school diploma (56 percent). (See Table 1. [Excel])

    * Seventy-three percent of veteran citizens cast ballots, compared with 63 percent of their nonveteran counterparts. (See Table 1. [Excel])

Voting rates in the online tables are calculated using the voting-age population, which includes citizens and noncitizens.

Let's just say...67% of the US Population votes(64% voted in the last election)....roughly 204 million voters. So your number of 175 million votes means...

    Obama wins by 85.7%?

    RIIIIIGGGGHHHHTTTTT!!!!

So by them canceling the Monday night "festivities" they almost cancel their whole convention?

Do you think they should have maintained the status quo and had the typical (Republican and Democrat's alike) rah rah, bash the opponent speeches while havoc may be being wreaked on the Gulf Coast?

And if they continued on with their convention, the Dems would be saying how insensitive the Republicans are for not paying more attention to the people down in the Gulf. Either way, they don't win with you Libs.

I stopped by downtown St. Paul this afternoon and the level and extent of security is impressive. The Excel Center is on the West side of downtown and between interstate 94 and the river. The security zone has pretty much cut off getting to Downtown st. Paul from the west except by the freeway. A lot of businesess are in the securtiy zone and I'm wondering how many of them have shut down since unless you have clearance you can't get to them. Another thing is that kitty corner to the Excel Center is a homeless shelter. The shelter is apparently still operating but has been cordoned off and it looks like the fence on it reinforced so you can't really see the homeless and of course they can't get out into the security zone.

With things being scaled back at the convention there's a lot of worry from businesses that were counting on convention business. St. Paul, Minneapolis and the suburb of Bloomington all have extended bar closing times to 4AM from 2AM but a lot of those bars are now wondering how many peopel are going to be in a party mood with convention and Hurricane Gustav.

And if they had the convention your talking point would have been how insensitive are the Reps for having a party while Americans are going through Gustav..........

Reading your posts are getting predictable..........

(It's quite funny as I am still going back and forth between the 2 candidates, that it would probably be in my best interest to stay out of the D&D portion of the BBS, because its these continual negative posts from those on the far left here (since it appears to be many more than those on the right), are almost making me want to vote in spite of them.)
