I don't post on politics much but the responses here are interesting. Most commentators are saying she gave an excellent speech (not just Fox News).

That is true. I have heard numerous commentators praising the speech.

I think it was effective in riling up the base, but it was so free of anything substantial and issue oriented I don't think I could ever call it a smashing success.

I only heard it from the background, but it made Brian Eno look like Beelzebub himself.

It must have been different in the hall than on TV, because on TV it looked pretty flat. Even Jorge was fumbling.

I always have suporported repubs on a lot of issues, but these 8 year Bush nightmare and Obama's leadership skills have swayed me. Soldiers are dying for nothing in Iraq, gas is $4 a gal, my parents are spending a goddamned fortune on bad health insurance. the Bush "legacy" is what has swayed me and others. heck the only positive to come from the last 8 years is sarbanes oxley and some tax cuts.

All in all, not a bad speech. I realize on an overwhelmingly liberal board like this with only a handful of decent, objective posters it's hard to get anybody to think rationally.

Not saying she hit this out of the park like I was hoping she would but she delivered where she needed to deliver:

    1) The lengthy "hockey mom" first part of the speech where she touted her family and essentially introduced herself to the nation.
    2) Established her "niche" with her passionate beliefs regarding energy, oil and hopes for energy independence.
    3) The traditional "VP attack dog" role where she used the crowd pumping one-liners against Obama.
    4) Touted McCain's leadership and readiness to be President over somebody who seeks the Presidency on a mission of "personal discovery".

That's the message the GOP and McCain camp wanted her to deliver. To her credit, she looked very poised and up to the challenge. I disagree with the posters here saying she looked in over her head. Like I said, it wasn't a home run but it was more than adequate.

You Dems just have to keep in mind Hillary sets the public speaking bar pretty high. Palin is not the orator Hillary is but that still doesn't mean this wasn't a good speech.

The first 10 minutes were utter crap. After that she got down to business and did what she needed to do. The worst part of her speech, in my opinion, was that she repeated that she was against the bridge to nowhere which is complete and total BS and has been exposed as such. She supported it and when congress shut the project down, the state kept the money and instead built the "road to nowhere". I'm honestly surprised she kept that in her speech after it was debunked by the press. Aside from that, she did the usual distorting of the truth (Democrats oppose enery and a weak on terrorism, etc) but she did what she needed to do.

Pretty much. I thought she did a great job of rousing the conservative base with crowd-pleasing lines, so from that standpoint it was a well-delivered speech. But as far as substance goes or addressing the issues, nothing to write home about. Which pretty much reflects what the Republican strategists are saying -- they think this election is going to be about personalities and not about issues. And they are wrong on both counts: if this election is about personalities, they don't stand a chance against Obama. And as a matter of fact, it isn't -- the issues are staring Americans straight in the face, and they've got nothing. Either way, they're screwed.
