FisolaNYDN Frank Isola Sad scene. NBA'er Mo Evans standing alone near street meat vendor on Park Ave. All he needs is the sign: "Will Play for 52 percent of BRI"
$0 - because Lebron left and he did not sell the team while he was there, he netted nothing off of Lebron, just a few scheckles from a more full stadium. Unless he sells it, nothing... A much different story due to Yao being from a large untapped market, Les made millions...and so did Yao a symbiotic relationship, which is all the owners are looking for..... They are not offering 25% BRI...they are offering an even split..... DD
lol you're dumb Dakota. The Cavs obviously made money off all of hte playoff games, the hype, the increased advertisements. Stop hating
That answer is stupid and not relevent. The owners lifestyle is NOT dependent upon the franchises making money, they have their lifestyle before they bought the team. What they want is the ability to have that asset appreciate.....and keep the overall LEAGUE healthy.... That will happen regardless of what anyone wants...the owners will win... DD
The demeaning tone towards those with differing opinions is getting old "Spooner". Grow up... For the good of us fans and workers at the stadium, I want a deal that protects the game.....not the owner's pocketbooks. There you go DD...
Truthfully, I would love an NFL style of contract, where there is no guarantee....that would be better for the league and players would have to perform every single year. The system is broken people.....it allows players to coast and not be held accountable. Break the union, it will be better for everyone. DD
OK. Since you were among those reluctant to answer my last question, how exactly will allowing players to maintain their previous contract provisions make for a healthier NBA?
Really? So what did Josh Childress and Hakim Warrick do wrong when Robert Sarver decided to spend Amare's money on them? What did Jeffries do wrong when Isiah gave him that contract? My perspective is that of the ROCKETS, DD, not the NBA. So answer me this. How is a system where moron GMs can get their mistakes forgiven again and again going to help us with Morey, or the Thunder with Presti? It won't. It'll help the teams that can spend more, not the smart teams - which will benefit the Lakers, thus creating more of your hated superteams unless we put in a franchise tag, which I absolutely oppose. Orlando will love this - it doesn't matter how many blunders Otis Smith makes, just cancel it, and spend and spend. Not us Until the owners talk revenue sharing seriously, anyone who actually thinks that the owners have the least interest in competitive balance or making it fair is a fool, and is falling for their propaganda.
I don't know your age, but the Rockets have had plenty of bad contracts over the years too: Kelvin Cato Matt Maloney And more recently due to injury: Yao Ming Tracy McGrady If we had an NFL style of system, you could simply cut those players. DD
And we are back to square one..... Wouldn't you agree that at least reducing the effectiveness of guaranteed contracts would solve a lot of these problems?
Oh, and the owners are talking revenue sharing seriously, the players just don't like what they are saying. Too bad for them, they can take it, or go get a real job like the rest of us. DD
I just want them to play hard and honor their contracts, players in the NCAA play much harder than those in the NBA.....guaranteed contracts have practically ruined the game. DD
Why are you guys bringing up something the owners know is not worth fighting for? This is not the NFL where players get injured every game. The benefits of having guaranteed contracts in the NBA far exceeds the benefits of players playing scared in the NBA. You don't want all of your players taking jumpers the entire game, and never dunking because they are scared of coming down wrong on someone's foot. In the NFL it makes sense because either way the players are going to be scared of getting injured.
That is one of the worst arguments I have ever read...players get insurance to not be worried, and if they play scared, you cut them. In the NFL, if you play scared, you don't play....you are out of the league.... The NBA and their guaranteed pay has ruined the effort, players can just coast....the only thing really worth watching is the playoffs where players try all game long. It is ridiculous and disgraceful.....they are not earning their pay..... I wish the owners would get rid of guaranteed contracts, then you would see much more effort out of all the players.....instead of Rashard Lewis and Gilbert Arenas coasting..... DD
The players get insurance because their contract is guaranteed. Why would the owners pay for insurance if they can just cut injured players? Everyone knew Lewis was being overpaid when he signed that contract. That's how bad the Magic wanted to compete. They believed he was worth it because of the wins he would bring to the team. Stop blaming guaranteed contracts for a problem poor management created. Those players you mentioned probably would not be coasting if they weren't given so much money. They would have to work hard if they wanted to continue getting paid.
Sorry DD but I would never post what I pay now in season tickets to watch NCAA basketball. Thats a game only a coach would choose over the NBA.
Let the players get their own insurance like people do in real life.... I don't get the whole thing about the players needing to make enough money for their entire life in a 3 to 4 year playing career. That is ludicrous, go get a job after the playing career is over...most players are too stupid to save anyway and more than 75% of them are broke 2 years after they are out of the league. Look, at the end of the day, I just want what is good for the fans, I don't care about the owners, or the players....I just want the game to be fixed. DD
You missed the point Reek, you would still have the pro players, but without guaranteed contracts they would have to play hard in the regular season too. DD
DD is right about something. The owners are genuinely interested in the success of the NBA. But, that isn't saying much. Of course, they'd be interested in seeing their investments grow more as with any business owner. However, they do not care about competitive balance, parity, or equal opportunities. They want to make money, period, just like the players. Anyone wondering why they aren't making a hardline stance on a franchise tag? They don't care about keeping Dwight in Orlando, Stern would love for him to go to a better team to keep boosting ratings. The owners want a harder cap and more of the BRI so that even the worst run teams can make huge profits. And, I don't really blame them. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could poorly run a business that no one wants to work for or consume your product and still make huge profits? And, the players are honestly stupid but not for the reasons people are saying. They may not all understand the economics of the situation the league is in but I'm sure they have someone there who can explain these things and their 52.5% BRI offers is likely one where the league would still be profitable. I think they're stupid because they aren't using any leverage. Any player not involved in negotiations should at least be flirting with playing in Europe. Basketball is the one team sport where players actually have leverage. If just the top 20 players leave for another league no one will watch the NBA. Yes, the players are more important than the league. They could legitimately force the owners to agree or effectively bankrupt the league. I don't want to see the nba go away and at the end of the day I just want to see basketball, not millionaires and billionaires bickering. But, based on everything we've heard the owners have no reason to compromise on their offer. If anything, they could just offer 40% BRI to the players only to watch them slowly crawl back and agree to it.
