Stern: "I would say both sides are very badly damaged..There will be two severe sets of losses, but that's what happens in a labor dispute."

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
Stern: "I know for a fact in short run players will not be able to make (lost money) back, and probably will never be able to make it back."

    ChrisMannixSI Chris Mannix
Stern: Not sure that anytime in the short run the owners will be able to make it back. Players probably never able to make the money back.

Stern: If we had made a deal, the first year of the deal would exceed 50% because of the amount paid from current contracts.

    daldridgetnt David Aldridge
Stern: these are not punitive announcements, they are calendar announcements...

Union source counters Stern's view that talks ended b/c "Billy (Hunter) left the room": "Mutual acknowledgment that the meeting was over."

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
Stern used newser to send message to players: You're bleeding money, and it will get worse. Storm the castle, tell Hunter-Fisher to cave.

Caught a little bit of the interview but he basically said he was shocked that talks broke down today. Said he heard from numerous sources Tuesday on, that a deal would have been done by the weekend.

Agree with @WojYahooNBA: Stern once again using media to send message to rank and file that things can and will get worse.

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
According to one team's research: If mid-level was cut for tax teams, NBA would save only $400M over 6-year period. (2005-'11 as sample).

In the big scheme, that isn't a great deal of money. Yet, the owners have hunkered down on the issue.

I don't give a **** about the players or owners, but it's the arena workers and other low end staff members who rely this game for revenue.

One of my friends works at the Toyota Center as an usher and now he's gonna be without a job. It sucks for him because he needs that money to pay for school.

I'm bout to text him to make him feel a little better. :(

That IS quite a bit of money. As was pointed out earlier by Darren Rovelle, the change from 51% to 52% of BRI is $280M.

It also improves the competitiveness of the smaller teams because the super-teams will have a more difficult time adding more talent.

I'm out of here. Heard this a million times.

Looks like Adrian has had it up to here with Stern, good for him.

Next key date will be in early November, when the league can no longer feasibly start a season by mid-December.

Sources briefed on the process expect next wave of cancellations to include games through the Christmas holidays.

“Until now,” one prominent agent told Yahoo! Sports, “the union’s strategy has been basically hoping [NBA commissioner] David Stern wakes up one morning in a good mood, and decides he wants to cut a fair deal for the players.”

This was from an article in July. It still holds true. I really don't understand what the players are realistically assuming could come from their strategy thus far. The amount lost already far exceeds what they are fighting for. Things are only going to get worse for them. I strongly doubt players will get as good a deal as they had gotten today. 52% will NEVER happen.... They just don't have the leverage to warrant that type of a compromise. Can someone please tell me what the thought process is for the players at this point?
