So the question would eventually become, how low would Orlando go?

If at some point McGrady says that he will only sign an extension for Houston, what is the minimum Orlando will accept?

IMO, even Francis and the TE is better than T-Mac walking after one season.

But what's the minimum they'd accept? Would they be willing to do a Francis/TE for T-Mac/Gaines swap? That's a good deal IMO. Between Gaines and Wilks, we have the backup PG covered. We just need someone to play decent minutes at PG. We keep our depth up front. All we have to do is find a PG.

If we follow that up with Mobley/TE for Damon Stoudamire, we're set.

    Yao/Cato
    Cato/MoT/Spoon
    JJ/Boki/AG
T-Mac/AG/Pike if Bobcats don't take him
    Stoudamire/Gaines/Wilks

What if we keep Mobley and take on Grant Hill and Howard (who sucks), but get rid of some of our own deadweight?

Houston trades: PG Steve Francis (16.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 6.2 apg in 40.4 minutes)
PF Maurice Taylor (11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.4 apg in 27.8 minutes)
    C Kelvin Cato (6.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 1.0 apg in 25.3 minutes)
SF Clarence Weatherspoon (5.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 0.6 apg in 16.7 minutes)
SF Eric Piatkowski (4.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 0.5 apg in 14.3 minutes)
Houston receives: SF Grant Hill (4.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 0.5 apg in 14.3 minutes)
SG Tracy McGrady (28.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 5.5 apg in 39.9 minutes)
PF Juwan Howard (17.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 2.0 apg in 35.5 minutes)
Change in team outlook: +1.7 ppg, -9.8 rpg, and -2.2 apg.

Orlando trades: SF Grant Hill (4.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 0.5 apg in 14.3 minutes)
SG Tracy McGrady (28.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 5.5 apg in 39.9 minutes)
PF Juwan Howard (17.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 2.0 apg in 35.5 minutes)
Orlando receives: PG Steve Francis (16.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 6.2 apg in 79 games)
PF Maurice Taylor (11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 1.4 apg in 75 games)
    C Kelvin Cato (6.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 1.0 apg in 69 games)
SF Clarence Weatherspoon (5.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 0.6 apg in 52 games)
SF Eric Piatkowski (4.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 0.5 apg in 49 games)
Change in team outlook: -1.7 ppg, +9.8 rpg, and +2.2 apg.

    TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to Houston and Orlando being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Houston and Orlando had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    PG: T-Mac, Brent Barry
SG: T-Mac, Mobley (basically, a three-guard rotation with T-Mac, Mobley, Barry, where everyone can take on the role of PG/SG at a given time, with J. Jackson also playing some time at SG)
    SF: Jimmy Jackson, Nachbar
PF: Howard, some veteran to be signed or gotten with the TE
C: Ming, some big body (Patrick Femerling, whoever)

Mavs have interest in Shaq, McGrady

By Art Garcia Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Shaquille O'Neal and Tracy McGrady let it be known Friday that they want out. The Mavericks are more than willing to welcome either or both in.

In shocking developments coast-to-coast, two of the NBA's marquee players are demanding trades, according to published reports. While teams around the league line up as potential suitors, the Mavs are well positioned, in terms of contracts and players, to make runs at O'Neal and McGrady.

"If we can get into any of the superstar sweepstakes, it's something we have to weigh and look at very closely," Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said Friday night. "Going into this off-season, it was our plan to be very active."

O'Neal, the league's premier center, is seeking a divorce from the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons, three championships and an MVP award.

Friday's news out of Los Angeles wasn't limited to O'Neal. Kobe Bryant has become a free agent, though it's widely assumed he will re-sign with the Lakers. Phil Jackson, the Lakers coach the last five years, is also out in Los Angeles. Some within the Mavs' organization believe that coach Don Nelson might agree to step aside to make room for Jackson, other team sources downplay the Mavs' interest in Jackson. But O'Neal is another story.

"I want you guys to write that if any GM out there wants a hard-working big man who wants to win championships, call [Lakers general manager] Mitch Kupchak, because he'll entertain offers," O'Neal, 32, told the Los Angeles Times. "My last six, seven years, I want to be on a great team."

Ironically, the team that lost O'Neal in 1996, the Orlando Magic, could be forced to part ways with McGrady, 25, the league's leading scorer the past two seasons.

Adding O'Neal, scheduled to make in excess of $29 million next season, is the larger financial burden. McGrady is set to earn $14.5 million in 2004-05. Both have the option of becoming free agents after next season.

League rules stipulate that the total salaries traded by one team be within 15 percent of the salaries received from the other team. In trading for either O'Neal or McGrady, a team would roughly have to send back their equivalent salaries.

The Mavs have four players -- Antoine Walker, Michael Finley, Antawn Jamison and Dirk Nowitzki -- making maximum-level contracts. Free agent Steve Nash could also be looking at a contract in eight figures.

Team sources indicate that Dirk Nowitzki is the closest the Mavs have to an untouchable player. Everyone else on the roster could be involved in order to land O'Neal or McGrady. The Mavs have a number of players with lesser contracts -- Eduardo Najera, Shawn Bradley, Danny Fortson, Tony Delk, etc. -- who could be used to make the numbers work.

Walker, eligible to be selected by Charlotte in the expansion draft on Tuesday, is entering the last year of his contract at $14.6 million and will be shopped if the Bobcats don't take him. Finley ($14.6 million) and Jamison ($12.6 million) are both proven scorers and each has four years left on his contract. Finley, however, is 32 years old. Jamison is 28. Nowitzki ($12.6 million) also has four years left on his deal and, at 26, is recognized as the cornerstone of the franchise.

I was referring to Stevie and TMac. They can be traded for each other, 'effective' July 1. We'd likely know that by the day after the draft, I would think.

Just FYI, Stein said on Sportscenter that Orlando wants "Francis, Mobley and a big man, Kelvin Cato, from the Rockets."

He DID say Cato in the interview. It was just at the end of his statement.

Trade Yao, Taylor and trade exept. for McGrady and Howard?!

    Francis
    Mobley
    McGrady
    Howard
    Cato

(No more problems with "players being too tired for the post season")

I think the main reason T-Mac even wants to com to houston is so he can play w/ Yao & your tryin to trade him away?

Dallas should be ALL OVER Shaq. The Lakers would be unwise to deal him there in my opinion -- or to any West contender. East and only East. The Nets and Pacers should have Kupchak on speed dial ... maybe the Heat too.

My feeling is that a McGrady deal will be done by draft day, and some scoopster out there will report it, but if it's the Rockets, then it can't be "officially announced" until later (because of the Francis BYC thing). The draft is kind of like Winter Meetings in baseball. My hunch is we'll know Thursday, but who knows.

I honestly don't think Orlando can hold out much longer - they may be enjoying these high bids right now, but if McGrady gets a certain team in mind (and only that team) as time goes on, then Orlando will be hurting and the value goes down.

If McGrady makes it known he will play for Houston OR Phoenix OR Indiana, then Orlando may make out like bandits in this one. But it benefits McGrady AND his new team for him to make a choice and say he will only play there. He will keep more quality teammates that way.

He wants a contender and in my opinion... Yao, TMac and scrubs will not get it done! However... Steve, Cuttino, TMac and Cato (quality center) sound like a great team to spread the defense! The only question... is Yao enough for the Magic?

People complain about Steve and Cat being in the same backcourt as redundant. Steve, Cat, AND Mgrady in the backcourt would be unbelievably redundant. Steve’s game would suffer even more than it was this past season playing in a Yao-centered offense.

Can anyone confirm rumors on Realgm that a Houston TV Station (my guess would be KRIV) has claimed that the Rockets-Magic are close to a deal? Has anyone seen anything or heard anything?
