Sure he could. Market economics. Lewis is only worth as much as market dictates. And the Rockets and Morey, as well as any other team showing interest, are part of that. Expressing a strong interest would indicate that the Magic would at least have to offer as much as the Rockets were willing too give, either in a free agent offering or a sign and trade. Whether what the Rockets were offering or could have offered was influential on the final price or not is another question, but to say it is "crap" to suggest the possibility of influencing such a small, finite market like the NBA free agent market just demonstrates ignorance. Another possibility brought up is that Morey was hoping to force the Magic to overpay in order to have a shot at Milicic or another Magic player whose salary the Magic would want to clear in order to be able to re-sign Milicic. Also not a "crap" suggestion. And the Rockets wouldn't be the only team to try this tactic. You have to know who you're dealing with and their assets as well as your own in order to negotiate effectively and get what you want. Negotiating tactics for a market with multiple suitors and only a few assets to acquire. Much of what is publicly announced, circulated through he rumor mill, or even floated to other teams regarding intentions is a decoy. The only reason to decoy is to create bargaining position and opportunities that don't presently exist. There are some issues that are obvious and to bluff them are silly, like the Rocket's need for Power Forwards. Others aren't so silly and the other GM's have to be able to discern which is which. Player agent's play the exact same game.
They can have him for the money he got. There is no way a team with a max dollar player should suck like the Sonics do. Thats probably why they let him walk.
Its really annoying at this point that Rick Adelman is preventing us from acquiring artest. i wish we had hired someone else. can you imagine how could we would be if we did the original artest deal and then signed darko or amir johnson for the mle, and maybe added joe smith for the lle? 1:Rafer/James/Brooks 2:T-Mac/Bonzi 3:Artest/Shane/Novak 4arko/Smith/Hayes 5:Yao/Deke/Jake O well, I guess the Maloofs won't let this happen. Looks like they'll trade artest to the knicks now. I cant wait to see zach randolph and ron ron on the same team. Maybe if that falls through though, the maloofs will have no choice? Maybe we could subsitute next years 1st round for this years and still get the trade done.
Thats aggravated assault waiting to happen on some crazy fool in new york. Those two should not be allowed to roam in the same area code much less in the same locker room.
who cares....we need a PF anyways....we were one rebound away from moving on last year to at least the WCF...lewis would not have gotten the rebound...we need a physical big PF....come on rockets get it done!!
WOW! I would of never figured out the bait and cast of GM ing without that indepth analysis. You are brilliant! Lewis a young allstar caliber player was the best FA on the market by far. 13 teams called to aquire about him the day he became a FA. Those were the factors in dictating his value. To suggest the possibility of one GM (Morey) with limited resources hoping to sway Lewis into taking a hometown discount is what "demonstrates ignorance". If Houston were never mentioned as a potential suitor for Lewis do you honestly believe Orlandos offer would of been any different? I mean really Seattle and all the other teams interested had no bearing on it at all? That is what some were suggesting and that is what I was commenting about.
Precision is a cluster of data that are near eachother, but not necessarily accurate. Accurate data is close to the real value. In this case, we should be accurate! Sorry, my chemistry lab definitions are taking over!
