I think with Syria on their border their hands are full. Maybe this is a response to suicide attacks on Turkish soil... the military wants to crack down on home grown terror. From Reddit: In Istanbul on business and my hotel have locked the doors. Crazy **** happening right now, a convoy of tanks rolled past a few hours ago and we've been hearing the noise of jets and helicopters intensifying over the past 30 minutes. Hotel manager preparing basement of the hotel to be used, a lot of people are scared including myself. Edit: Just to give an update, nobody here knows what's happening. A lot of hotel staff have ran home, there's just a handful left and around 60 guests all congregating in the lobby. There were men in military uniform talking to what's left of the hotel staff around 10 minutes ago, they fear pro government jets will start firing and want us all to move down to the basement. Can someone please contact the FCO in the UK on my behalf? Please send me PM and I will give you my details and location. Many people can't get in contact with their embassies or consulates including some Americans and Canadians.
Might have something to do with this: [rQUOTEr]Germany will recall soldiers from Turkey if MP visit blocked: vice chancellor Germany will recall soldiers serving at the Incirlik airbase in Turkey if Ankara continues blocking German lawmakers from visiting the troops, Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in remarks published on Wednesday. Turkey, angered by a resolution passed by the German parliament last month that branded the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman forces a genocide, has denied German lawmakers access to the base. "The German army answers to parliament," Gabriel told the regional newspaper Mitteldeutsche Zeitung. "And if parliament cannot visit its army, then the army cannot stay there. This is absolutely clear." ...[/rQUOTEr]

March: WILL THERE BE A COUP AGAINST ERDOGAN IN TURKEY? http://www.newsweek.com/will-there-be-coup-against-erdogan-turkey-439181
There have been 4 military coups in last 50 years in turkey. In None if them there has been any resistance. Lets see if there is now here. Istambul mayor and erdogans party are calling ppl and sending sms to go and fight.
It sounds like the police in Istanbul and Ankara are fighting as well. It should be noted that this is the first coup where the internet and cellular networks are available. It used to be much easier for a coup to cut off communication. Back in the day you just had to take control of TV and radio and the telephone switches and be done with it. Nowadays its not quite as easy.
Shiiiiiittttt, Erdogan reportedly refused "landing rights" in Istanbul and is seeking asylum in Germany, per MSNBC.
Media here is saying that the coup is started by kemalists because they believe it the only way to save the country from terrorism. Also now erdogan appear on skype but military has shut down all social media and seized all tv stations. but hes not dead or hostage
Probably nobody. The Turkish military has done this in the past, and one of their roles is to intervene and take control whenever things get tipped to far in the wrong direction. Erdogan has been heading that direction for quite some time now...many expected something like this to occur a while ago.
In taksim square now people are gathering to go oppose the army. Also all police belongs to erdoganand they fight too. Things dont look well.
Whatever the country has to go through now is better than Erdogan leading the country further down towards becoming Pakistan.
This is worrisome. The AKP has asked citizens to go out in the street and fight the coup, and people are gathering. The police seem to be fighting the military as well. Given the Islamist tendencies of the AKP and many of their supporters, a coup that removes them and installs a more secular regime may result in AKP followers turning to militant and radical Islam. I am of course glad to see the AKP fall, I just hope that this doesn't lead to a civil war like in Syria. And we should certainly be worried of even more Islamist attacks in Turkey after this (though at least now the AKP won't be in power to facilitate such attacks). I honestly think a civil war between the Kemalist coup and Islamists is a large possibility.
