Do the new black models (don't remember the official fancy name) have the same problems?

Yes they do, AFAIK. I'm guessing MS isn't quite sure what is causing the problem(s). Or they don't want to make it look obvious that there was a problem to begin with.

This how you fix the red rings. You go to walmart and put a 2nd 360 on credit. Then you go home and swap out all the parts with your busted 360 except for the shell. Then you take it back to walmart and say it's getting the red rings. They don't even check. If you want your money back they will take it. Way I look at it is it's Microsoft's fault for making crappy hardware. I mean geez my super ninetendo still works without any problems, but my 360 dies within a year. that's garbage.

I work for a website that re-sells customer returned Best Buy Items. We just got a shipment of roughly 3000 Xbox360's in and so far about 60% of them have the Red Rings of Doom.

Another report, citing a 30%-33% failure rate from retailers (3%-5% is "normal" BTW):

I don't know how credible former employees are...nevertheless there do seem to be a lot of failures.

I wonder if this is something they can fix for future models.

There's also an unnamed, current employee of Best Buy being cited that agrees with what the unemployed guy said. I agree that former employees and anonymous sources are not necessarily the most credible sources of information though.
