Thanks for making my neighbourhood a "Red" district, Tommy. For all the convenience I can now go kiss John Boehner's ass with ease. I feel sorry for the great state of Texas. You lost your proud son and I mourn with you.

He resigned because his former aide Tony Rudy plea bargained a deal to cooperate with the feds in future investigations.

This is bigger than Ronnie Earle's indictments.

    Delay is toast.

Ha. What a coward. And it shows you where his real loyalties lie... in the DC money machine rather than with his constituents, but we knew that already. I wonder if by moving to VA he sets himself up for an easier Federal pen then he would get if he lived in Texas...

For a guy that said just a few years ago that "I am the government," this has got to sting more than a little bit.

From TPM Muckraker, who are all over this...

Scarborough Calls DeLay a 'Man of Courage and Commitment'
    4/4/2006 10:55:00 AM
    To: National Desk
Contact: Don Feder of Vision America, 508-405-1337 or 866-522-5582

WASHINGTON, April 4 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In response to news reports that Rep. Tom DeLay is planning to end his race for reelection and resign from Congress, Vision America President Dr. Rick Scarborough called the former House Majority Whip "a man of courage and commitment, and a friend of over 20 years."

"More than anyone in Washington, Tom DeLay fought our battles -- to end the horror of abortion, preserve the sanctity of marriage, rein-in a runaway judiciary and keep America one nation under God. We would be ingrates indeed if we did not take this occasion to express our appreciation for the contributions of this great man," Scarborough declared.

Vision America held a widely publicized War on Christians conference in Washington, D.C. last week. Rep. DeLay was a keynote speaker, along with Sen. John Cornyn, Alan Keyes, Phyllis Schlafly, Gary Bauer, Rabbi Aryeh Spero, Janet Parshall and evangelist Rod Parsley.
The conference was covered by ABC World News Tonight, The Washington Post, USA Today, Time magazine and The Washington Times, among other media.

In an article in the online edition of Time, Rep. Delay credits the War on Christians Conference with helping him to make a decision about his future.

"I'm proud of Tom's participation in our landmark conference," Scarborough said. "And I would remind the media that in America, a man -- even a terrorist suspect -- is innocent until proven guilty. Of course, in the eyes of some, that's not the case if the accused is a conservative Christian."

The author of "Liberalism Kills Kids," Scarborough added: "Heroes come and go. The cause of returning America to its Judeo-Christian roots continues."

Besides its conference, Vision America is planning a series of rallies across the United States to awaken Middle America to the reality of the War on Christians. For more information on Vision America, see their Web site -- http://www.visionamerica.us -- or call Don Feder at 508-405-1337.

Joe Scarborough needs to take up his Christian morality to answer Lori Klausutis' ghostly cry.

Um, that would be... Yes. But it's never been about Christianity... it was always about taking advantage of Christians to increase their power.

I've never been in the hangout before today. Nothing to add here, except one of my all-time favorite lines from Blondie's Die Young, Stay Pretty:

"Deteriorate in your own time. Tell'em your dead and move away".

    Well done, Tommy.

DeLay's resignation might potentially benefit the Republicans in more ways than possibly allowing another Republican to hold onto his district. I saw some campaign literature recently for the Minnesota Senate race to replace Mark Dayton. This literature was targetted against the Republican Mark Kennedy who currently is a US Rep. mentioned that he had voted often with Tom DeLay and that DeLay had raised money for him. By having DeLay step down though it diminishes the power of him as an issue in a variety of races around the country. So while yes DeLay was a major figure his departure might still end up helping the Republicans more than if he stayed.

So I would agree that its a good thing in the short run for him to step down but from a Democratic standpoint this might not be a blessing.

No matter how hard you push the political calculus, this Dem is happy that one of the most odious characters in Congressional history is gone. It's good for America.

I disagree. If you look at my post earlier, I said why. In my opinion, his resignation due to corruption and scandal helps Democrats nationwide. The only place it doesn't help is in his own district. I think you underestimate, Sishir, just how momentous DeLay's fall from power, and his resignation, is, and how it gives Democrats yet another round of ammunition in their fight against the GOP's culture of corruption. DeLay and his legal battles, which will include Justice Department indictments, are not going to go away between now and November, IMO, despite the frantic spin by those like Fox News. I watched Ann Coulter whining pathetically about DeLay running away from his reelection on Insanity and Bones. It warmed my heart to see it. The far-right that controls the GOP is in disarray, and ripe for defeat in November.

I think the political fallout, nationwide, will be huge.

The way the bugman has slithered into his spider hole allows campaigners to imply whatever wrongs they want and can paint anyone associated with him with the same brush. It's not fair but it is Delay that lowered politics to new levels. If he had stood up and campaigned he could have at least denied the allegations thrown his way that are untrue and claimed they were minor technical offenses or something to mitigate the damage.

This a strange tact for a man used to confrontation.

That’s because his lawyers probably sat him down and explained to him that he had better start concentrating on the allegations of corruption against him if he didn't want to face the real possibility of spending the next 30 years in prison.

It is good for both Republicans and Democrats, because it is good for America, and all Americans.

The Democrats can add this to their tally of Republicans busted for corruption. They can say Delay resigned in the wake of ...(long list of ethics violations, and criminal investigations) They can then mention a slew of others who have pled guilty, been convicted or are currently under investigation. Whether Delay is actually still there or not doesn't matter. All Dems have to do is remind the people what kind of govt. they get when they vote Republican.

But no matter what both parties are better off, because he is out of the congress.

No question that the country is better off, regardless of which party one leans towards.

I can imagine the commercials this Fall... you could run a spot showing the faces of those in the various corruption scandals from the GOP, with a voice-over saying a line about each one, and then each face gets stamped with a big X, with a sound like a hammer striking an anvil. (or maybe a European stop sign... the circle with a slash through it. something visual that makes you pay attention) It would end with DeLay, the most arresting hammer sound (naturally!) and the message...

"Remove the culture of corruption in Washington by the Republican Party. Our government is NOT for sale. Vote Democratic on election day."

Start running them four weeks before the election.

Three pages of posts and not one of our blind-faith conservative friends to be found ( I too lean Republican and I consider myself a conservative; just not one who blindly supports anything the GOP spews out) . I was at least hoping for someone to come on and say how we, by celebrating Tom DeLay's resignation, are demoralizing the troops and dividing America ;)

Or at least mentioning how this is a blatant attack on Christianity and the war on Christians. At least that’s what Delay says it is.
