Very good points Panda, very true... The most shocking thing for me with all this "JVG's drama sells some tickets" angle is that the Chronicle completely bought into it. The Houston Chronicle!!! For years it has been to Les what Pravda was to Stalin, and now all of a sudden they come out swinging in defense of Jeff van Gundy???

    Here's how things went:

Morrey: Mr. Alexander, here is the spreadsheet that I talked to you about, it clearly shows that coach van Gundy had the highest coaching efficiency quotent in the league, when adjusted for playergames lost to injuries, further normalized by scoring differential and subtracted by reserve player discontent, which as you know, Mr. Alexander was one parameter that had impacted us very negatively this last year...

Les: Wow, Darryl, that's fascinating... still, don't you think that some of the games were, errr, what is the word.... quite ... hmm unwatchable. I mean that game in Utah, you know I would have rather had a three-hour root canal done while at the same time having severe bout of ulcers than watch this game again? Don't you think so?

Morey: But Mr. Alexander, the winning coefficient rarely correlates positevely with what some consider "attractive" style of play...

Les: true, true, but you know... I noticed at games that fans are happier when the ball goes "swoosh", you know just an observation...

Morrey: Mr. Alexander, the fan satsisfaction coefficient strictly correlates with winning percentage and very looseley correlates with points per game...

Les: OK, you convinced me. Where do I sign?

Morrey: well, Mr. Alexander we have one little glitch here. Coach van Gundy is still not sure he wants to coach next year...

Les: Hmm. Let's see now: we have Memphis, Indiana, Seattle, Charlotte, Sacramento and who knows who else all with vacant coaching positions. If Jeff stiffs us up, how do we know there will be a decent coach out there to hire. You know, I really, really, don't want to have to bring Tim Floyd to coach us. We have to at least start looking for somebody as a back up plan...

    weeks later:
Les: Darryl, this guy Adelman sure knows his stuff. I was impressed.

Morrey: Still, Mr Alexander, my chart clearly shows that coach van Gundy has a better coaching quotent. And he has decided that he wants to coach, isn't that good news?

Les: OK, OK, let's renew him, where do I sign.

Morrey: weeell, there is still this very minor detail, nothing substantial, you know, but Jeff wants you to call him and tell him.... [looking at his notes] oh here it is... "Jeff you are the biggest basketball genius this planet has known and Red Auerbach is like a pee-wee weekend coach compared to you." He specifically pointed that the "pee-wee weekend coach" is something he is very inflexible on, I tried to softened it to "junior-high gym teacher -coach" but he wouldn't bite...

Les: Darryl, let me call my accountant. (5 minutes later). For a minute there I thought that I had sold the team in a moment of temporary insanity, however, my accountant claims that I am still the owner... phew, that's a relief. Darryl could you please tell Mr. van Gundy that he is no longer with the team. Thanks!

LOL. If I was Les listening to all that stats talk, I'd fire Morey before the coach.

The way I look at it, JVG's stubborness made his success as well as his failure. He, once again, tried to force things when he's not in the position.

If Jeff doesn't see eye to eye with the owner, he should be candid and tell the owner "sorry Les, I don't see it that way, and I won't resign, so hire me or fire me it's up to you." I would appreciate Jeff doing business in a candid, up front way instead of delaying the Rockets indefinitely without giving a clear answer. Jeff calculated that by stalling "the silent protest" Les might back down and let him have his way. He's wrong. Les is determined to revamp the Rockets offense. They are bound to part ways, it's nobody's fault.

    interesting . . . .
I said something similar when SF left
that he would have been more successful with a little more tweaking
    and
I said T-mac may take use further but I would not be convinced that it was all him.
Well. . . up til now .. it has not happened

JVG is gone. . you bitter. . . that does not make the Rockets a Less Class Organization
anymore than the fact that SF is gone . . .

    . . . . ..

Sorry, I know this is a little off topic but I just wanted to address this. Utah was NOT one of the 3 best defensive teams in the league. They were 19th in Defensive Effficiency this past season. The Phoenix Suns and especially the Dallas Mavericks ranked significantly higher than Utah.

What the Spurs, Detroit and Utah DO have in common, however, is that they (in order) ranked 4th, 6th and 3rd in Offensive Efficiency. On that note, I'll take Adelman for sure.
