As I recall, "Houston" didn't get much of a choice in the matter. Voters were never presented with a proposal. And Adams' decision to leave included his own decision to take the name, colors and team history....completely beyond "Houston's" control.
Of course not. They're the Ravens. With their own history. The Browns wear throwbacks. They did it last year.
At the debut party they had a white helmet. I always wished they'd wear it. Technically that's "throwin' back" to Day One of the name Texans.
I think you are confusing the team with it's owner. We stopped going to games, because Bud Adams had already dealt the team to Tennessee. There was no future in Houston, and the team was garbage due to Adams gutting it a couple years earlier.
Yeah. The combination of 2-14 in 1994 followed immediately by the tenth refrain of "I'm going to move the team if you don't give me what I want" made for a tough audience. But attendance didn't fall off the cliff until the move was essentially a done deal. It was difficult to take Bud's threats to move seriously until it was too late. He threatened to move the team all the time. He had been threatening to move the team since 1960. It was all part of the game he and the city played. And the same game that the city played with the Rockets and Astros, too. Had those two teams been as aggressive about moving as Bud ended up being in 1995, they'd have moved, too. I don't know that that fact means that the city isn't interested in the Astros and Rockets.
You do realize that the Baltimore Ravens are the original Cleveland Browns, right? It's just that Cleveland got to keep the name, history, colors, logos, team records, etc . . . and the Ravens left everything behind and built a new identity and a new history. There's a deal in place that if the Minnesota Twins ever relocate out of state, their name, colors, and World Series trophies stay in Minnesota. When the San Jose Earthquakes moved to Houston and became the Dynamo, San Jose retained the name, colors, records and the 2 MLS Championships they won. When the Sonics left Seattle, they were allowed to keep the name, colors, and logos. And if a team ever ends up in Seattle again, they'll share the Sonics history with OKC. Many here wished Bud would have done the same thing. Go ahead. Take the team. Become the Titans and start a new history. But leave the history of the Oilers to Houston just like Modell ended up leaving the history of the Browns to Cleveland.
the city threatened a lawsuit if modell tried to hijack the name and history; that's the only reason they didn't go with him. i think the NFL should allow franchises in their current incarnation to simply end when the team moves. the houston oilers should be the houston oilers: 1960-1996. period. end of story - nothing goes with the moving team: no name, no records, no history. what's wrong with that? i lived in dallas when the stars moved, and the idea of honoring players that played their entire career in minnesota is just silly. i imagine titan fans feel the same way.
Yeah, I know he didn't do it out of the goodness of his heart. I just wish we could have done the same thing.
Yep. But the Ravens are the Ravens. They didn't keep the Browns history so there is no reason for them to even consider wearing the Browns throwbacks.
And when they left D.C. to move to Minnesota, they left the Senators name and logos and whatnot behind for that team that became the Rangers.
I only suspected you were an idiot before. This confirms it. What kind of human garbage can say something like this? You can be mad all you want. You can be stupid as well. You don't need to say things this evil though. I simply can't believe people throw around words like this trying to be tough guys on the internet. Wow, amazing. He that wishes death upon another is no respecter of his own life. Period. Be careful what you reveal about yourself in here.
me! you know what's funny - i posted that 8 or whatever months ago and had totally forgotten about it until this thread was resurrected today. and when i saw it, i was like, "huh - that was rather tense." LOL. funnier, it garnered exactly one response: msn - of all people - agreeing with me. more LOL. seriously, pick a fight with someone else; you bore me to tears. all huff and puff on the inter - (yawn) ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ..... cool. thanks! awesome! you know, you're right. from now on, i'll just anonymously call other people idiots and then rail about internet tough guys - how does that sound, "republic"? (if that's your real name.........) lighten up, francis - i wished death upon an organization, a non-living, non-human entity. i guess i should have done the more honorable thing and just called them idiots, eh?... seriously, you're making me wish it was 1864 and i was due on the farm in sev- ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.........
I always wished that Bob McNair would retire #34 for Earl out of respect for what he did for Houston. It is freaking weird to see any pro athlete in Houston wear the number 34 these days. It would be a classy move and it'd be another way to stick to Bud's b**** ass. Then retire #1 for Warren and maybe #79 for Ray and #74 for Bruce... we could have a Houston pro football day and honor them for how hard they played for the fans of Houston.
WORD. The city leadership are certainly not without fault, and some of the insults lobbed at Bud and Nashville, as have been pointed out, are over the top. And, it is what it is--the franchise history did go to Tennessee and not much effort was made to retain it. That doesn't mean it doesn't SUCK. And that doesn't make my stomach turn any less when I see the Columbia Blue running around in freaking Nashville. And Moon and Matthews and Munchak and the Tyler Rose's numbers hanging there. Every time I see it it ticks me off. Anyone who doesn't feel that way is fine, and I can certainly listen to and appreciate other points of view. People are connected differently to sports franchises, so of course their reponses to things will be as varied as the people themselves. So, I don't expect anyone to feel the same way I do. But I can't reconcile it. It just sickens me.
Yeah man, because calling someone an idiot is exactly the same as wishing them to die of aids. You're trash. Period.
