Arrests after woman beaten, set ablaze in Afghanistan

    Warning: Graphic video

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VcSs5JM71s0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)The Afghan woman is dragged onto a roof and hit with a stick, as a horde of angry, screaming men swarm around her.

At one point, video shows her standing with her face covered in blood. She is pushed and falls over, and her beating continues with feet, with rocks, with boards. Then, in the last part of the video, her body is engulfed in flames -- though it's not known whether, by that point, she was already dead.

This horrific scene played out in Kabul on Thursday. It's already had ripple effects, including a United Nations statement on Friday condemning what it called "the brutal killing and burning of a 27-year-old mentally ill woman."

That corresponds with what the woman's parents told CNN affiliate Tolo News, saying their daughter suffered from mental health problems for the last 16 years.

It's not known whether her attackers knew this, or whether it would have mattered.

What motivated the mob, according to witnesses, was a belief that the targeted woman had burned the Quran. CNN hasn't seen any proof that she set a copy ablaze. Afghanistan's Ministry of Hajj and Religious Affairs has found no evidence the woman burned the sacred book, according to Tolo.

Mark Bowden, acting head of the U.N.'s Afghanistan mission, said that burning the Quran hurts efforts to promote "understanding and mutual respect between cultures and religions."

"However, the brutal murder of this woman is an unspeakably horrendous act," Bowden said, "that should result in those responsible being prosecuted, to the fullest extent possible, under Afghan law."

    Body burned, thrown in river
Nahid, a 45-year-old woman who goes only by one name, told CNN what she saw and heard outside the Shah Do Shamshera shrine, which is opposite a mosque by the same name. A group of women were shouting at the eventual victim, accusing her of burning the Quran, according to Nahid. The woman yelled back.

This got the attention of men nearby. Police tried to close gates to keep them out but it didn't work, said the witness, noting that many men jumped a fence and began beating the accused woman.

The hits and kicks ended after someone poured fuel on the woman and lit her on fire, said Nahid, who watched from inside the shrine.

"(They) burned her and then threw her corpse away in the Kabul River," she said.

President: Not up to individuals to enforce 'Islamic justice'
Within a day of the attack, nine people had been arrested in connection with the woman's death, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi.

Seddiqi said that the investigation is ongoing.

President Ashraf Ghani ordered two investigations related to the case -- one into the beating itself and another including religious scholars.

His government is "committed to protecting and safeguarding all Islamic values," values that including prohibitions on burning the Quran (if that is, indeed, what this woman did).

That's one responsibility of the nation's security and legal system. It's not a responsibility of individual Afghans, Ghani said.

"No individual is allowed to make oneself a judge and use violence to punish others in degrading manners," the President said. "Launching personal trials and choosing who to punish stands in clear contradiction to Sharia and Islamic justice."

    --------------------

Note the messed up reaction of the Afghan President - he doesn't say the woman should not have died...he just says it wasn't these guys' job to do it.

Totally screwed up. And I hate that it even needs to be mentioned that there is no evidence she burned the Quran. Like that should even matter.

These stories always make me sad and remind me that humans are an insecure race of violent primates, willing to kill and die for superstition.

So stupid. Like I've said before. Burning the Quran is like the only way to discard of one.

Does anyone think the 2 people who voted for the first choice would have done so if the poll wasn't anonymous?

There is a good chance that they might be just trolling with the poll.

    im super-cereal kid.

of course, anyone who burns a book deserves to be burned. i for one am glad you started this thread b/c this is a topic that is rife for lots of constructive, meaningful debate.

i am quite surprised that the poll is leaning so strongly towards "burning people is wrong"...i genuinely thought the breakdown would lean the other way.

This forum would be light years different if it weren't for anonymity. It allows trolls to troll, jerks to jerk and keyboard cowboys to ride high without consequence. Majority of these live and drop their poop in D&D.

I think iv'e finally figured out a way to describe what it means to post every negative thing. Its like if i make a effort to post every time a person of a minority steals, shanks, gangb ect, and plaster it in hopes of " figuring out a solution to this"

I literally thought tinman had probs...

This is far from "every negative thing". If people were to post "every negative thing" that happens in the name of your religion, there would be 1000000 x more threads.

While you would rather not see such news discussed, you should direct your complaint to CNN which had these news as front page headline news.

Spare us your fake outrage. Stay on topic - what do you think about the mob burning a woman because she allegedly burned a quran? Did you watch the video?

The answer to nearly every one of your posts is:

    That's horrible.
Those evil people should be punished.

Does ClutchFans have an auto-response feature? If so, that would be easier for all of us to respond.

    Let me ask you:

Do you think this is a random crime that only happened because people in Afghanistan have a lack of education and "poor socio-economic circumstances"?

Or do you see a common theme between this lynch mob murder and the Charlie Hebdo killings and the murder of Theo van Gogh?

They're trolling and probably don't care because it's a ridiculous poll.
