JVG's fault again? Van Gundy said in the chronical that getting out and running is a habit that has to be learned, if you don't do it, its hard to get into the habit of doing. "We don't run," Van Gundy said. "We sort of straggle down the court. And then when we do have one, we don't convert. " Check out the article. He even blames the frontcourt a little bit for the fast breaking. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/2271783
Yeah, but when we do have FBs we blow them. There is no way I will buy the excuse "we don't do it enough, so they're rusty when they do Fastbreak." No way man. So if we don't have a lot of layups in a game is it okay for them to blow them simply because "They haven't had a lot that game." These are all petty excuses that don't seem to bother any other team. Do you really think the way to solve these Fastbreaking problems is to try to fast break more? That'll just lead to more blown FBs which turn into FBs the other way, plus you tire out Yao or MoT who can sadly get you a better shot in the half court.
Actually the commentators and sportswriters all said our offense had no structure and looked like ISO streetball.I remember a game against the Bucks in Mil.(we actually beat them) where their commentators went so far as to call our offense 'trash'. I couldn't count how many people complained about our horrible O. Who cares how many PPG we scored 3 years ago with a bunch of different guys on the team and no zone d? BTW, that 9 points or so more a game didn't really help us get into the playoffs did it?
45 regular season wins Yao Ming's second year. 43 regular season wins Yao Ming as a rookie. 45 regular season wins without Yao Ming.
And without a zone + an old but steady Hakeem Olajuwon. Thanks for leaving that out... Oh, and no playoffs. Plus, it was Steve's best year as a pro(of course without the zone) and he's been getting WORSE ever since. It was argueably MoT's best year as a pro as well. This thread died 3 days ago, just let it go man.
Well they had a lot of nerve talking trash while the team they work for was getting their asses kicked, as the Rockets only lost one game against the East that year. But yeah, if they said it, it must be true. So what's the difference between 45 games this year, and 45 games that year, and that old steady Hakeem you talk about played a whole 50 games.
It wasn't just the Mil. commentators it was everyone. Don't you remember? We were one of the big reasons that the zone was put in place, because we'd just clear out and go one on one almost...all...the...time. 45 games is good, but not when everyone else could exploit man on man in a lot more high percentage(and thankfully creative) ways than ISO, ISO, ISO. I used Dream and also MoT simply because they were our best offense weapons despite Steve taking the most shots. Steve has never and will never be a high percentage shooter, yet every Steve fans thinks he's still the man which makes no sense if you want the Rockets to be a good team. Its a paradox that Steve fans can't seem to grasp. He's not a fit for this team, he might have been if the NBA hadn't voted for the zone, but it still wouldn't mask all of his fundamental flaws in fastbreaking, ball handling, and passing. Strange how those are suppose to be the main PG duties, but that's overlooked by Steve fans, I guess because he such a good rebounder for a point guard or something. If you don't see how 45 wins in a non-zone NBA without a playoff spot, and 45 wins in a zone NBA with a playoff spot are different, then I can't help you and no one else probably could. I know you're a huge Steve fan and think he gets too much blame, but most of the blame is justified in my opinion. The rockets will be better without him, you'll just have to wait and see.
Has JVG ever coached an offense to score more than that Rockets team did? If not, how is magically subtrracting Steve going to make this offense better?
Scoring is great, but if your defense can hold the opponent under your point total, that works too. Subtracting Steve and adding a more efficient player would help our TEAM,especially with the way JVG coaches. If this T-mac for Steve and whoever trade actually goes down, I'll watch the magic all the time just to see how well Steve and Co. do in the east and with free reign. It'd be fun to watch, but I guarantee that Magic fans will be have the same complaints that we have after awhile.
Nope. I seem to remember just as many comments similar to this one: == http://www.siskiyous.edu/class/pema36/malone_files/011031.html (originally on espn.com) 2001-2002 preview: Few coaches have the guts to change their system depending on the personnel, but Rudy T graduated from the Don Nelson School for Fly-By-The-Seat-Of-Your-Pants Coaching. Back in the mid-'90s, Rudy T created an offense that revolved around Hakeem's low-post offense and Houston's 3-point shooters; last year, he created an entirely different offense where Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Moochie "There's comedy, there's high comedy, and then there's my afro" Norris could freelance, take people off the dribble and kick out to shooters spotting up. How many NBA coaches would have even thought of that? Few coaches can maximize the talent of their players, regardless of the circumstances. == and this one. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/feigen/1961716 June 21, 2003 - Separating Reputation from Reality Reputation: The Rockets "iso" too much. Reality: Actually, the Rockets did not iso enough. OK, that might not be quite true. But a case could be made that Rudy Tomjanovich overreacted and removed too much of the isolation plays from his game plan. The Rockets seem to iso so much because they run so little. If they use 17 isos in a game with 82 possessions, it looks much more stagnant than the Mavericks' 25 iso plays in games with 100 possessions. Don Nelson has been an iso guy since calling plays for Sidney Moncrief and Paul Pressey in Milwaukee or Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway in Golden State. But because his teams run, the iso plays don't stand out as much. The Rockets also have a tendency to dribble the lettering off the ball when they do iso, making those 17 plays stand out even more. Even Larry Brown, who has always preached the antithesis of isolation basketball, ran more iso with Allen Iverson and the 76ers. ==
I'm confused edc, do you think those articles are suppose to work FOR you? LOL. They ISO'd a lot and ran so little...not good. BTW, those other teams they compare the Rockets to won 53 and 56 games with Philly going to the NBA finals that year. The whole point is that ISOs were bad because we couldn't win with them yet it was the best Steve and Co. had. Isn't it ODD that under that great offensive specialist, RudyT, we STILL didn't run very much? Hmm, I guess Rudy T couldn't make Steve do it either, but somehow it's JVG's fault...
The point is that (a) not "everybody" thought the offense was bad, and (b) "ISO ISO ISO" simply wasn't the case last season. THE ROCKETS 2002-03 RAN FEWER ISOS THAN MUCH OF THE LEAGUE.
(a) the ones that didn't were in the vast minority (b) BTW, we were talking about the 00'-01' 45 win season not last year. We didn't win 45 games in 02'-03, remember? I thought it was odd that you used a 02'-03' report but used my quote about the 00'-01' season, at least try to stay in the same season.
