You can probably tax your way out of deficits if you tax rich people who aren't productive with their wealth. They'll probably think twice about liquidating companies and jobs if they pay a stiff penalty to do it.
Crude oil naturally has diesel/furnace oil, kerosene/jet fuel, naphtha/gasoline blendstocks, and heavier oils in it's composition. Refiners can slightly adjust cut points in their distillation towers to increase yields of one product or the other but they can't just make gasoline instead of diesel because they are both in the crude oil already. Ultra low sulfur diesel takes a lot more processing to remove enough sulfur to meet specifications. The process that removes sulfur is known as hydro-treating. It is a very expensive process. Most refiners had to make large capitol investments to increase hydro-treating capacity to make ULSD. The rise in the price of diesel was much more than supply and demand. If it cost more to produce a product then prices naturally go up.
They have had high energy prices relative to the US for decades so I while they have problems now I'm not sure what that has to do with their gas taxes.
Don't you get it? Repubs are against ANYTHING that dems put out. Doesn't matter if they contradict themselves.
not defending the Republicans because they increased spending and the size of the Federal Govt just like Democrats did but rather than increase taxes why not cut all this wasteful spending? Further increasing taxes is not going to help productivity in this country.
Where exactly would you like to see the cuts to "wasteful spending"? We have a deficit of about $1 trillion. Can you point out anywhere near that much in wasteful spending to me?
Not a fan of cap n trade per say, I prefer a straight tax. It is decidely annoying to, once again, here the GOP stalwarts complain about that which they previously advocated.
Do you have any suggestions to change the equation as it stands? We burn cheap oil, we pollute the planet, enrich Wahabbism, export massive amounts of capital that could be invested in the US by Americans for American jobs and innovation, become dependent on countries that we have little influence in to the point of defending Kings with American lives, leave ourselves vulnerable to catastrophic interruptions in our energy supply with total collapse of our economic system a possible result of actions we aren't in control of, and continue to tie our next generation to the same problems that we have known about for 25 years. You see the "market" does not factor in long term issues by itself. By definition profit is the goal, not sustainability or security. It is up to civilized people to look at the longer term needs and tweak markets to make better solutions on par with profitability. So, what do you suggest?
In principle I agree but cap and trade proved successful with reducing sulfur emissions so it might be successful with reducing carbon emissions. I agree this is a moderate proposal that does leverage the power of the market to make decisions, rather than through fiat. Like with health care reform this just shows how many would prefer to just be the party of "No" than try to work on solutions.
I'm convinced that the worst thing about Reagan era is the fact that it has bequeathed generations of persons with a dull, warped set of assumptions that have very little support in research, or that dont' show up in the real world and that can't really be empirically validated, yet are taken as absolute gospel and blandly and stammeringly repeated again and again. It's not logic so much as a pack of zombies armed with faith in slogans.
Wasnt cap and trade the market based solution the CO2 emissions that conservatives initially supported? I mean combining emissions reductions and capitalism was supposed to be brilliant right? Nowadays when you mention cap and trade its the same thing as raising taxes.
Postives and negatives are certainly worthy of discussion, but it's still better than doing nothing. I'm not upset about cap-n-trade by any means.
whole nother discussion. what's going on is people think common sense folk like sarah palin are always right and that those stupid people with their heads in books don't really know what the real world is like. that's why someone like sarah palin can actually become a national candidate. but what's really annoying is hearing supposedly educated people like ron paul and his son preach these simple concepts, such as the market will solve everything, instead of addressing the complexity of the issues.
I, for one, am a fan of cap-and-trade. It's some kind of bizarro-world seeing the Democrats pushing it and Republicans objecting. Cap-and-trade embodies the Republican faith in the power of the market. The Democrats finally come around and admit it's a good idea to leverage the power of the market, so the Republicans have to figure out a reason to disagree.
surely you cant be serious. Do you think our Govt is running efficiently? There is way too much waste. Just do a quick google search. You will be surprised that you don't even have to complete the phrase. Just type in "wasteful" and the number one suggestion is "wasteful government spending"
It really looks to me like the opposite is the case, given that the right wingers seem to take everything put out on Fox by faith while the people who lean left tend to base their opinions on facts and available evidence. There are exceptions, to be sure, but there are a lot more bassos out there than there are people like Refman.
So you shouldn't have any trouble sniffing out $1 trillion in wasteful spending if your assertion is accurate.
