I want to see more of Amen-Reed backcourt. Theoretically it would work. Both guys have good court vision and Reed theoretically can space the floor for Amen's drives. It also frees up some of the forward minutes to Brooks, Tari and Bari. Not sure how Udoka sees this. If the Rockets keep both Green and FVV, it's hard to imagine the coach not playing the original starters and not able to fit more of the Amen and Reed together in the backcourt.
I’m sure how Ime sees it. It’s FVV and Jalen with MAYBE a few less minutes for FVV. Ime is all about rewarding hard work which is a positive trait in a leader, but can also be detrimental to a team if his love of effort is overshadowing obvious weaknesses for the team. Anyone watching our backcourt play this season and believing it is not the most glaring weakness on this team has blinders on. Amen and Reed will never be able to get enough minutes together to get the necessary synergy or provide enough positive reinforcement for Ime to make the change.
This was so obvious to so many of us for ALL of last season. Reed's skillset is exactly what the Rockets needed to turn the corner... and it was on full display in the playoffs when we struggled to score for extended stretches. Why did the coaches not spot this sooner? Or at least give him some minutes in the playoffs to see how he'd do? It's mind boggling. They didn't even give it a try. Too stubborn. SAD
I know as long as both Green and FVV are on the roster and healthy, we're not gonna see much of an Amen-Reed backcourt. One of them might be subbed in for some backup minutes but not likely both. I am tired of the extreme streakiness of BOTH Jalen's and Fred's shooting. You never know which version of each of them will show up.
If we end we staying pat, really depends if someone can step up and actual playmake and consistently run an offense. Poor FVV had to do way too much because no one else or a combo of players couldn’t fulfill that role.
Rather than Holiday I would like Tyus Jones as he is more of a playmaker, we have Reed who can play the Holiday role. We dont have any good playmaker on the team who can set the offense apart from FVV, a vet like Jones would be perfect and while he isnt good defensively, we have the rest of the roster to help on D. Reed seems like a hard worker and a good kid with high bball IQ, after a warmup season he should be ready to be part of the rotation.
I totally understand that neither Amen nor Reed were ready to be full-time starting PG last season. This was especially true for Reed in the first half of the season. So I'm not complaining as much as some people here. I am hoping that Amen and Reed will continue to improve. Reed looked much better in the latter part of the season when he got to play longer stretches. Amen's learning trajectory is through the roof. Neither of them fits the traditional PG mode. But both of them look like they have what it takes to be at least decent at initiating offense. And it's fine to have a backcourt of two combo guards. Having a playmaking center like Sengun should indicate that the traditional PG-oriented offense might not be the best fit for this team. I think even Udoka would not think that FVV is our long term solution. Worse case scenario is that Reed is a bust and Amen isn't a good organizer. That scenario is possible but not likely. Honestly, I think Jalen is a bigger issue than Fred. I really think when Jalen shoots well, Fred doesn't have to shoot that much and the whole offense looks better. But after 4 years, I have pretty much given up hope that he will become a reliable scorer for us night in and night out. This kind of players are ideal for a 6th man role. (For the record, I have not been advocating the 6th man role for Jalen. But I am now coming around.) Play him a lot when he's hot and sit him when he's not. Will the coaching staff do that if Jalen stays with the team?
