Maybe, but he probably doesn't get the 9 assists. Swap out Reed for Holiday, and it makes no difference in the outcome of the game, but the kid could keep his momentum going. That's the thing that is annoying. No one seriously argues for him over FVV right now, but it really should be him over Holiday.
Really hoping they send him back to the vipers for their game in Austin this Friday. Was planning on making the drive down there
Glad he could make it, but I prefer him getting big minutes in a lesser NBA style system than warming the end of the bench. Holliday has been good off the bench and better in the minutes given. This isn't a knock on Reed, but there is little room very error on the court this season.
Ime gave Reed minutes and a spot in the rotation the first two months of the season. Reed didn’t take advantage of the opportunity. He didn’t get a lot of minutes, but he was getting in games and he literally wouldn’t shoot. When a player gats an opportunity, they have to take their shot. A couple of years ago, I’m sure Reed would have gotten more minutes. But, now the Rockets are fighting for playoff position and players that are too timid to shoot the ball hurt the team. I’m a huge fan of Reed and I think he’s going to be a good player. But right now Ime wants to win games, so he’s going with veteran players. Longterm, I think Reed will do fine. But right now I want to see him play more G League games. His time will come.
DING! DING! Mr. T. Great finally gets it!! Remember I was the one who tried to save you and all the other Reed fans from all this anguish and confusion. Let this be a lesson to you buddy.
From what I saw it WAS, him over Holiday consistently to start the season. Then he started missing many shots and playing porous defense, which helped Holiday, Tate, and even more so Cam to take over those lost minutes of Reed's. Hopefully he can do what Cam did last season and take that momentum he built in the G League once he gets called back up.
I think thats a tough sell and the data doesn't agree. I think we do lose that game if we play Reed instead of Holiday. And I think that's the tough part about finding minutes for Reed, I am high on him and I think he needs development but at what cost? You can't sacrifice wins to develop him, we aren't a tanking team. So it's really really tough to make the decision in the second quarter to put Reed in because you don't know if those minutes will end up costing you the game. I think he'll find most of his minutes against bad teams where we can afford to lose his minutes but still win the game.
It was only 9 minutes and Holiday managed 2 turnovers in that time, didn't create anything for anyone, did nothing on defense, but he did make 2 3's...not exactly a difficult performance to top. Plus, after his G league showing, it's very likely defenders would have been on him a lot more leading to better spacing for everyone else to operate. On top of that, Reed is a better defender than Holiday. The alternative is to waste the momentum and confidence gained by the G league stint and harm his development in favor of going with a journeyman who is likely to be out of basketball entirely in a year or two.
It's not about the one performance though, its about the whole season. Holiday has a +12 net rating and Reed is -2.8, so most of the time when we sub Reed into the game, the chances are we lose those minutes. And then compare that to Holiday where we win his minutes most of the time. I get it, we need to develop Sheppard. It's just hard to find him minutes when these are your two options, and you never know when it's going to come back and bite you. It would be a lot easier to play Sheppard if we regularly won his minutes.
