i was there for the 1st game...and i like the enthusiasm but not going to lie, gets pretty pathetic that only 30 people are screaming and its very off key/uncoordinated. just my 2 cents, go rockets
yeah, I went to the Memphis game. I will be at the Spurs game this weekend, but both games are not part of my plan and I just couldnt wait to see my Rox. I will be checking you guys out sunday nite. My wife is from san antonio and is a spurs fan so we will be there. We are actually pulling some double duty and going to the Texans game as well.
saw you on the Rockets broadcast last night. you were chatting with the guy with the basketball "armor".
I find it annoying on the telecasts when they talk to "the head Rowdy", but in reality it's just the media/promotion guy they use at events like the open practice and draft party. I just think it's lame that they try and make him seem like just another fan and then he suddenly goes into some scripted things about Rockets ticket packages. Then again that guy gets on my nerves anyway, so whatever
How about during the National Anthem, when they get to the part "the land of the free and the home of the..", everyone yells Rockets! Too over used?
Ye ask and I shall deliver. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fDPHLHbjCo8"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fDPHLHbjCo8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="600" height="350"></embed></object> Also at the end of this clip is texanskan, the thread starter, waving the Greek flag. So us Rowdies are there unfortunately they filmed us in probably one of the very few times we were all sitting taking a break. We stand probably 95% of the time. Oh well.
Am I the only one that thinks it's not a good idea to do a cheer for a guy that's shooting FT's? How about making some kind of sound when a player MAKES a free throw? Maybe something like "SWOOSH!". It seems like a lot of college student sections do it's a nice touch to the atmosphere.
How hard is it to get into the rowdies? God, if I still lived in Houston, I'd be one of the rowdiest there.
No you wouldn't. I think the thing about cheers is that you start with something and then build on it. My advice is this: start small, be consistent(do it every game) and wait for it to catch on. When it catches on, add something. You have to remember that you are working with a crowd it is mostly uniformed. Make it simple. Next time I get the chance to go to a game, I'd love to see that ya'll have built some unity in the crowd.
The Rowdies need to meet together well before the game and practice all their chants. It needs to be organized. Just random, ambient cheering won't have the same impact as organized chanting. I bet we could have a great free throw defense on the rowdies' side of the court if they can get their act together.
It's preseason. We intentionally just showed up to see how we were as is. After two games, it's clear we need more organization and we are already working on that. All that said, our disorganization sticks out like a sore thumb when there is only 8,000 fans during preseason all sitting on their arses. I'd suspect the 1st regular home game vs. Dallas will be much louder. Our chants may get lost if the entire building is loud in which case we'd simply need to scream and yell MORE. We'll see. Red Rowdies is all new so we'll figure it out as we go. If you guys have some good ideas for chants, pass them on. It's gotta be short and sweet. For example some of the best chants are: MVP ...MVP... Yao Ming Song Eddie ...Eddie... blah blah... That's because it is easy to coordinate and easy for the rest of the crowd to join in. Don't suggest any chants that are like a whole sentence worth of crap cause that won't work.
- We want No-vak! *clap clap clap-clap-clap* - Let's go Rock-ets! *clap clap clap-clap-clap* - Beat the (insert other team mascot) or Lets beat (insert team's city) [whichever fits better in terms of syllables] *clap clap clap-clap-clap* - Bil-ly, Bil-ly, Bil-ly (whenever Spanoulis is playing well) and of course, you guys HAVE to do the wave at every game. I've seen it get started there before even without a special fan section. Nothing gets the crowd into the action quite like the wave...
For organizational sake, isn't it better to have a sort of "Yell Leader"? Not a pretty boy like Rick Perry, but someone who leads the cheers. The classic "I say Van, You say Gundy!" or "I say Kill, You say Bill" chants are easy to get together and organized, but need a leader. Another thing that I got from my college days was doing very cursory research on the opponents and giving a light-hearted chant against them. Nothing like the Duke fans do, but something to distract them. A memorable one from college was the "Penders has a bald spot" chant.
I think the concept is great... and the arena definitely needs something right now... BUT... winning cures everything. The Rockets crowds in the mid-90's (from the second championship till the Barkley year) were some of the BEST crowds the NBA has ever seen. Think what the Astros have now is good? That's merely a bi-product of winning. The Astros crowd in the final years of the dome (where attendance was decent) weren't anywhere close to what they are now. Winning is everything... the Rowdies will be 100% more effective if the house is packed, and the aura of winning permeates. Unfortunately, you need real playoff success to attain that.
