I’ve had this turtle for a few years, about 8” now. It’s getting too big to care for, and putting it back into the wild probably wouldn’t work because it’s been out for too long. Anyone know of a sanctuary, zoo, etc. that takes turtles?

Apparently you’re never supposed to release a pet turtle into the wild, no matter how long they’ve been in captivity. Sorry I know that’s not helpful but just something I learned recently.

One of the top 100 invasive species in the world if i remember correctly. He’ll probably do fine in the wild.........and at some point, something will eat him. Same as any other wild creature.

Better off looking for an individual to take it.

BE CAREFUL putting it on Craigslist. They will LIE to you and put your turtle in turtle-fighting training rings. I don't care what Michael Vick says, he's still in to that!!!

It's the most popular pet turtle in the world. Then people *cough* get tired of having it and set it loose in areas that are not its native territory. Risks carrying diseases/viruses that can affect other turtle species, also interbreeding (more prevalent in the Alabama slider).

If you got it in Texas and live in Texas you are ok just turning it loose around any permanent water. It's a ****ing reptile, it will not forget how to eat or do basic reptile functions.

If anybody ever wants to give away a good sized softshell turtle, let me know. New Orleans turtle soup is awesome.

If you can get to Austin. UT Austin has a turtle pond with mostly red eyed sliders. You can just drop it in there. We had a couple of red eyed sliders in college and once they got a bit bigger, we let them go in there.

    Define TOO BIG?
How much space does it require
I always had the illusion that you just feed them some lettuce and leave them alone

C'mon, guys. OP is talking about a pet he's had for a while, and y'all are advocating that he either eats it or casually saying that it'll become food. Y'all ruthless af.

OP is talking about a pet he’s had for a while. At eight inches, the OP finds it too big to take care of, so he’s hoping to find a place to A) dump it, while B) assuaging any possible guilt for doing so. Exactly WHO is ruthless af?
