Reconstructing Hasheem: CD goes to work with Thabeet on Friday

Carroll Dawson did terrific work in helping Hakeem Olajuwon refine his game around the basket. He did the same with Yao Ming and has worked tirelessly with Jordan Hill with mixed results.

On Friday, with the Rockets back in town, he'll have a one-on-one session with Hasheem Thabeet, who was the second pick of the 2009 draft and once projected as an impact player.

His rookie season was modestly productive despite numbers that lack otherwise. He seemed to understand that his game was defense and rebounding. But it fell apart this season and he ended up at the end of the bench.

The Rockets have no idea if his career can be resurrected, but they think he's worth a try if he understands what he can be, and more important, what he can't be. If he can focus on defense, rebounding and shot-blocking instead of scoring, he has a chance.

He lost his defensive focus in his second season. If he wants to score, if he thinks he's a scorer, he'll probably end up out of the NBA fairly quickly. But if he wants to work at his game, if he has Patrick Patterson's heart and desire, he has a shot.

We have the best big man coaching in the league, if Hasheem doesn't improve here it's solely on him.

I am pretty impressed with Jordan Hill's jump hook, a CD specialty. However, his defensive rotation needs a ton of work. There's only so much a personal coach can do. It's up to the player to make it happen.

I'm personally not going to hold my breath.

Did CD ever work with Cato?

It's good to know the Rockets will work on his game early. HOU's the best place for him to improve. Good mix of veterans and young guys and such a nurturing locker room atmosphere. Go, Hasheem!

I think both Hasheem and Goran need a lot of confidence. Chuck and Kyle will get 'em going

LOL! The hubris. He might as well have been teaching a rock how to think. That reminded me of all the Spontaneous Generation proponents arguing that life comes from non-life (eg. maggots spawn from rotting flesh) while Louis Pasteur was drawing precursors to the facepalm .gif.

Man who wrote this report? He does not have much confidence or faith that Thabeet can be much but a scrub in the league. I hope CD can find a spark or amber in Thabeet that he can work with. I can't wait to see the video of CD working with Thabeet. I hope Thabeet is a quick learner.:)

Lets go Thabeet! I can see improvement in Jordan Hill's games, I just don't think he has the fire. Hopefully Thabeet has some.

The only thing that will hinder Thabeet is his desire to learn. He has all the tools to become a very good defensive presence in the paint. If he can get that hook going, then he would be awesome. He should do like Yao says and go at it every chance he gets. Stay on the practice court for hours at a time to polish his skills.

Is Yao Ming's foot still in a cast/brace?

Can he move around enough to show Thabeet a few things about how to defend in the NBA while being a slow gigantor?

Their bodies are remarkably similar: huge legs, huge ass, relatively small upper body. Yao Ming grew up with parents who play basketball, though, and Thabeet didn't start until age 15.

Well that's one down. I'm hoping Sikma, Dream, Yao and hell, even Calvin Murphy are next.
