Initial rumors were 2012-13....but I have not heard much and both MS and Sony are making a lot of money right now as is....there is not much benefit graphics or gameplay wise to improve the hardware......right now. DD
Interesting. Thanks for the reply. Right around the time 3D TV's are a bit more normal perhaps? As for the thread... One reason to own a 360 over a PS3... Halo Spoiler freaking Reach
I know Juicy I'm just playing... PC gaming is great. Consoles bring me back to the days of playing GoldenEye on the N64, I looooove a good console game. Btw, Anyone peep GoldenEye coming out for the Wii in a couple months? My family has a Wii that is quite literally collecting dust. GoldenEye the reason to hold on to it?
Relying on downloadable titles for filling out genres is kind of weak IMO. Some great stuff for sure, but I wouldn't really like it if my genre of choice was limited to 5-6 $5-$10 2D classics (some/most of which I already played years ago). You could say the PS3 has tons of amazing RPGs, but when 90% of them turn out to be PS1 classics (Suikoden, FF7, FF8, FFT, Wild Arms, etc.), doesn't really help the lineup much IMO. Better than nothing I guess, but I wouldn't go around saying that the genre is well represented on the console.
There's no reason not to include them. I know you've never had an XBOX, do you at least play stuff on PSN? There are some great quality titles, not just old '2D titles'. You look at stuff like, say, Braid or Limbo, and they are already some of the best games of this gen. Whether or not you bought them in a plastic box shouldn't matter.
I doubt it. I do enjoy my Wii though. New Super Mario Bros, games from the Virtual Console and WiiWare make it worth it to me.
Some of the best games of the generation? Well, matter of preference I suppose. I do play a decent number of indie PSN (and PC) games, including Braid. Great stuff, but not really comparable to retail releases IMO. Which is fine because they shouldn't be. Great to have some "bite-sized" innovative gameplay to compliment some of the "blockbuster" retail games. It's fine to factor them into the equation, but I just wouldn't put them on the same level as retail games. I think if you say a genre is well represented on a platform, but if 90% of the games are <$10 downloadable games, maybe there should be an asterisk. I generally just think of XBLA/PSN/etc. games as their own genre when discussing them with others (especially since a lot of people ignore them). But maybe I'm alone in that thinking, in which case I should modify my earlier statement to pertain only to retail games (i.e., good variety including downloadable games, not so good variety if you stick only to retail games). Though I think we still end up with some genres underrepresented. Indie games really help give us a breath of fresh air for puzzle games, platformers, shooters (not the FPS kind), etc. Don't really a get a lot of those in some other genres, especially with new IPs. End up getting nothing, or 2D classics or remakes of older games.
Both games (particularly Braid) are very well reviewed. If you are interested in that type of genre (puzzle/platformer), I think they fit right in among the best we've had this gen. Eh, I think if you are talking about the gaming options you have with a system, there's no reason they shouldn't be. They are games just like all the others, and some of them are very, very good. If you guy any console, they are part of the library just like anything else. Now, I agree that there are some genres under represented this go around, but this is simply true of all the systems. You used platformers, for example; (though honestly if you are a big platformer fan you should probably have a Wii anyway) they simply are not big movers this gen. Even in the comparison you made, you had to include a game not out yet, a game that (while I absolutely love Ratchet and Clank) is just barely a platformer, and a collection of PS2 games. Quite simply, a genre like platformers not having many options is a trend of industry, not a failing of 'variety' for one of the HD platforms. But overall, no matter what types of games you want to play, you often have about the same number of options on both systems. The 'variety' claim is just a non issue.
