unfortunately I don't have the right shaped head to shave it. I would look like a conehead. I got the two little bald spots close to the temple, so I will end up with hair like Ernie from TNT or David Letterman. I have really no other option than to start trying these products. I'm 22, maybe it will work.
I'm with the crowd that says just cut it down real short or shave it. I think it looks a lot better than long hair in most cases. I'm 23 and don't have balding problems, but I am starting to get some gray, which kinda sucks.
There is a documentary about this very hair solution... <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-Vas11ECOB4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-Vas11ECOB4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Of all the stuff mentioned, Propecia really works. I've been on it for about 2 years now. Take the 5% minoxidil (store brand Rogaine works just fine) once or twice a day for good measure. That will give you a good 1-2 punch against hairline recession.
Fatty -- I'll second the vote for Propecia. I think that's your best bet. One of my buddies started using it in college, and the stuff worked. Now he's 33 and his hairline is still fine. As someone else mentioned, the earlier you start, the better. And if you're just now noticing it, you should be fine. Supposedly, propecia works against both thinning and the receeding hairling--over time it (allegedly) can make the hairline lower. Other benefits? It's not a pain in the ass like rogaine or gels or "itchy" stuff; it's just a pill you pop once a day. The downsides? There are two. One's minor and one could be major. The minor one is that it's expensive, about $50 a month (if I remember correctly.) The other is that, for 20% of men or something like that, it can reduce your libido. (If this happens, that would reverse when you went off it, but something you should be aware of.) Anyway. I know all this because a few years ago, I went through exactly what you're going through now, so I tried propecia. I was happy with it, my hairline didn't seem to get any worse, my libido didn't change--everything was fine. Then one month I got lazy and just forgot to get a refill, kept forgetting, and stopped taking it. But my hairline hasn't gotten any worse. If I do see a change in the near future, I'll hop back on propecia in a heartbeat. Good luck. (btw - I can give you a run for your money on being superficial.)
You can get generic Propecia for cheap or you can get Proscar and divide that pill into 4ths. Price shouldn't be an issue. And the percentage of men who see loss of libido is only 2%. And it is reversible once you stop taking it. No problem.
Cool.. thanks. Any websites you recommend? It's funny. I get like 10 spam e-mails a day for Propecia, but if I ever really wanted to buy some, I'd have no idea where to look.
I wouldn't recommend cutting up pills. Some of them are timed for a slow release, so if you split it up, you end up getting the full dose all at once.
Do a google search of Jamie Foxx and hair transplant. Looking at his hairline during the "Jamie Foxx Show" and "Miami Vice" you can see a huge difference in his hairline. I hear he covered up the scar by putting a tatoo in the back of his head.
Kids: I'm not balding. I'm receding. I was hoping someone knew about some drug to curb it, or, honestly, about hair surgery. If Ben Affleck and Matt McCaughnagay can do it, I think I can, too.
